The underpinning movie of digital age of ITV is this, with the movie being played every day for about a month on ITV2 then the same on ITV3 followed by another month’s worth on ITV4 before they showed it on ITV1 which just seemed a bit of overkill after I brought the blooming DVD about a week before this all kicked off. Originally released in 1993 this movie is based on the exploits of the Jamaica Bobsled team at the 1988 Winter Olympics. Starring Leon Robinson, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis, Malik Yoba & John Candy this was produced on a budget of $17m and it went on to make $154.9m at the box office as well as making the bobsled team of Jamaica heroes and the East Germans Bobsled hated by the world. Scoreboard is not mentioned as IMDb gave this a 7 out of 10 whilst Rotten Tomatoes liked it a bit more at 76%. I shall move to the plot now.
This story follows the Jamaican Bobsled team in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. They begin with three of the four being on the verge of qualifying for the summer Olympics in the 100 metres when one falls over bringing the other two down. Thus meaning they couldn’t qualify. The fourth member of the team is a soapbox car driver. When one decide that rather than the summer they could form a bobsled team as being a good sprinter would make a good bobsled team member. So, they decide the only way into the Olympics would be to make a team. The problem is that the one that fell thus preventing the other two from going to the Olympics turns up to join the team. Meaning that the team is already at conflict before they got together. They discover that there is a former bobsledder on the island and try to convince him to coach the team. He is not interested as he was a shamed cheat and has hidden this fact which the team discover later. So after lots of attempts to train they finally go to the Olympics but although the world is pleased to see them the rest of the Bobsled teams feel they are disrespecting the sport and are vilified. The Olympic organisation don’t want to be associated with a cheat and don’t want the team their either so how are they going to win them over? By winning and showing how great they are!
OK this is a great and very funny but please do not believe that this has much fact or truth about it. They weren’t the first bobsled team from the Caribbean in fact they weren’t even the first team from Jamaica. The East German team were very supportive of them and they welcomed them where this movie makes them evil. They were never anywhere near the top of the charts in this competition they did crash but this was in qualifying and they never made the final. They didn’t carry the bob to the finish as they had really crashed. There are many more that I wont mention now as I want to say this is a funny movie that just works it makes the spirit of the Olympics finally shine through eventually. The comedy and John Candy help this movie shine in a light entertainment way. I fell in love with this movie because of the silly humour that just works and makes this movie fun, entertaining and more importantly a lovable movie.
