Well here’s another kid’s cartoon movie to review there seems to be seam of them coming through at the moment that will no doubt change with a horror movie next! Released in 2009 this is a computer generated cartoon from the debutant directors of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. With a cartoon there are not stars but voices and we have a great list in this one with Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Bruce Campbell, James Caan, Bobb'e J. Thompson, Andy Samberg, Mr. T, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Al Roker, Lauren Graham, and Will Forte. The film was made on a healthy budget of $100m and went on to recoup $243m from the box office. It’s success lead to a sequel and its own TV series which was equally as funny as the original. From a successful financial point of view how did the critics take this one well to say indifference would be an understatement. With IMDb giving it markedly less with a 6.9 out of 10 but Rotten Tomatoes giving it an inflated 86%. I will skip to the plot shall I?
On the island of Swallow Falls Flint Lockwood is a scientist well he wants to be a scientist. The island in the Atlantic Ocean has been built on the economy of Sardines which his father has made his living from for years and is expecting Flint to follow suit. The rest of the world is turning its back on the fish as a food and the island is looking at the death of the island as the economy fails. Flint’s only companion is his pet monkey Tim. Many of his inventions are laughed at and he is mocked for many of the failed attempt at inventing things. He invents the ‘Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator for transforming food. Which completely shorts out his entire house making his father slightly annoyed. So, to get more power he rigs it up to a riser pole to use the power of a substation. Turning on the machine causes a power surge rockets through the town and destroys a park created by the mayor before shooting off into the sky. As Flint is hitting it off with a weather reporter a multicoloured cloud descends and it starts raining cheeseburgers. With the machine still linked up to his computer he is able to programme the weather to produce any type of food out there. From raining spaghetti to snowing ice-cream. His love of Sam the weather girl grows and talking about growing the mayor is now his new best friend and eating for the town and probably the county as well. She turns out to be a nerd just like him and was bullied just like him except he has shot stardom in the town and is now a hero with tourist flocking to the island. Flint starts to see the food mutating and growing bigger but the mayor is continuing to push Flint’s invention for his own desires for food and money. You can see where this one is going with the food mutating and the only official close by pushing for more and more. Will the machine cope with the demand and will his love grow and get the approval of his father?
This is very much a kids movie with any kind of scientific kids movie they fly far and lose with the possibilities of science and if you are going to get hung up on the make believe science then you are going to hate this movie. It is however very funny and stupid. It has Bruce Campbell in it an he actually get one of the leading roles in it. SO IT HAS TO BE GOOD! And Mr T as the Police officer was perfect with his shouty type of approach is perfect. The plot is ridiculous but with so many comedies out there you have to accept it and just enjoy the rollercoaster of stupidity. This is a kids movie but I dare any adult to watch this mindless business and not laugh at some point. Its silly but its entertaining silly. I also cannot here the name Lockwood without hearing it in Mr T’s voice and having to shout it as well. So when one of my kids has a teacher at their school called Lockwood then my own version of Tourette’s kicks in and I end up shouting Lockwood all day long. It’s the same thing when someone mentioned the word rehearsal which also has to be sung. Anyway I distress! This is a good movie with Bruce Campbell in it so it has to score highly with me. Which it did… so what do you want me to say?
