This film always reminds me of my dad at Butlins and my wedding, but I will get to both of those stories later. First of all, I need to start with the usual business one of with will be the new entry on the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge Scoreboard with a three point difference between myself and IMDb’s identical score of 7.9/10 meaning the 3 points difference is coming from Rotten Tomatoes as they liked it more than us with an 82%. This puts it on a joint second position which it will share with Harry Potter’s Order and South Park. Released back in 1987 and made with a budget of $25m this went on to recoup a $106.2m at the box-office starring a man that went from hero to shunned actor as well as some other famous names. With the list being Kevin Costner, Charles Martin Smith, Andy García, Robert De Niro and Sean Connery. With music from the legendary Ennio Morricone and directed by Brian De Palma. The movie was based on a book of the same name by Oscar Fraley & Eliot Ness.
The plot is the story of how they got Al Capone. Obviously set in the 1930 during Prohibition and Al Capone is the reigning kingpin of supplying illegal liquor in the city of Chicago. Bureau of Prohibition has a new agent in charge called Eliot Ness who has the job of bringing a stop to Capone’s activities. His first attempt to break the cartel ends in a bust at a factory but is disastrous as he pulls out oriental umbrella’s rather than bottle’s of booze. This makes Eliot realise that Al Capone has his fingers involved with the police and corruption reigns. He contemplates his career on a bridge when an Irish beat cop approaches and asks him why he has a gun he says he is a cop. So the Irish cop accepts this and walks off, this irritates him as he didn’t ask for id. The two becomes friend and Eliot hires him for his team. They turn their back on the rest of the police as not knowing that they cannot trust any of them so don’t rely on them. They are sent an accountant for the team and they hire the best academy student from a gun which completes the four main characters to get Capone. They soon realise that they only way they could succeed is by illegal accounting rather than smashing the booze rings. Now they have to get Capone sounds simple doesn’t it.
I loved this film as the first time I saw it I never got the end and when going back found I had grown up enough to actually understand what was going on. There was a couple of things that I didn’t but I got there in the end after being a bit older. So story number one the soundtrack for this movie is amazing and some may argue Morricone’s best work but that is for other people. For me there is an amazing uplifting theme which is an amazing conclusion and success sounding tune which we were going to use at our wedding they failed to play it and we walked out in silence instead. So, hearing the uplifting track reminds me of the lack of music at my wedding but there we go one reminds me of the other which is nice. I watched this for the first time at a cinema within a Butlins I am going to guess at Bogner but my dad wanted to watch this movie called The Untouchables which I knew nothing about so off we went to the theatre where they showed movies. About half way maybe three quarters I was watching it but uncomfortable and rested my elbows on my knees and held my cheeks with flat palms and my dad turned to me and asked if I was bored and whether we should go. I said we didn’t have to but he asked again and despite enjoying the movie I thought he must be bored and wanted to leave so I repented and said we should go. Hours later back at the chalet he told my mum he was enjoying them movie but thought I was bored where I thought it was the other way around. So, we walked out of a movie we were both enjoying because we thought the other was bored with it! It took a long time to catch up with the rest of the movie and it was worth it. The story and the hardship that these men went through just to get their man was unbelievable, putting your family at risk because people want to stop you. This is a real good v evil drama that ends in a court room with one party trying to convince a bought jury to convict a criminal master. Great movie well done with an absolutely stunning soundtrack as well, go enjoy!
