I say part 3, I could also say the third and final part of the story. This had my childhood and compared to the binge watching of tv series of people today (OK show how old I am and say) Young People with their Netflix accounts watching series after series of TV shows. I even know people that refuse to watch the programme when its on just so they can save up the binge watching. Well back when I was *cough* and *mumble* we had a classic sci-fi time travelling movie that left with a great finish. But just the credits appeared the words ‘to be continued’ appeared and we didn’t have a click to wait not even a week to wait we blooming well had years to tick past before we could get to the second part of this story and then they did it again with the end of that one saying ‘to be concluded’ and even had a trailer type conclusion to the movie. Setting up a western style movie but how if we had just been to the future why would we go back there. Well the plot and second movie spoiler no doubt to come. Released in 1990 and starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Mary Steenburgen, Thomas F. Wilson and Lea Thompson. This movie was produced on a budget of $40m it went on to recoup a sizeable for its time $246.1m which was fitting for the conclusion of this story. The critics, the cinema goers and the fans loved it. Plenty of what they call Easter eggs referring to each of the previous films. As I just touched on the subject of critics I am pleased to say I can update the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge scoreboard. Moving into joint second position in the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge is this fine movie and the split is due because I am between the other two for a change! With a low of 7.4/10 from IMDb and the high being 80% from Rotten Tomatoes, of course this could move further away should a closer movie appear with a closer scoring spread. Finally after all my waffling I get to the plot.
Sorry I forgot the plot! Only kidding after all that! It begins with Marty receiving a letter just after Doc vanished. The letter says he is alive but living in the year 1885 the letter also explains that he can find the DeLorean so Marty can return to 1985 and not try to bring him back. Looking at the history of the town Marty reads that Doc was shot and killed six days after the letter was written by Biff’s relative (great-grandpa) Buford. Marty decides to travel back to try and save him and takes the DeLorean back to 1885 but arrives speeding into the middle of the wilds and the fuel line is cut but not having the time to worry about that as he appeared right in the middle of the Cavalry charge against some Indians. Forced to hide the car in a cave which happens to be home to a bear. He is knocked out trying to escape and wakes up ala the first movie with his mom saying it was just a dream you are alive and well in good old 1885. Again seeing his relatives seems to be ok this time out. Catching up with Doc, Marty convinces him to travel back with him but with the fuel line cut there is no way to get the car up to the required 88 miles an hour. So, the plan is hatched to take a locomotive to push the car up to the magical figure. Its almost too easy. Only Doc has just saved and then falling instantly in love with a woman he rescued from a runaway stage coach. There is also the small matter the ‘Mad Dog’ Buford is 6 days away from shooting the doc dead. How is all this going to conclude. Well I know as I’ve been Back to the Future before many, many times.
This is a great movie and although the weakest of the three stories this is a fitting conclusion for the boys who had gone through hell to get into this predicament in the first place. This movie really takes me back to a simpler time when my problems where so much smaller and not worth the worries I gave them. Now here we are dreaming of going back to those times and sometimes a movie can do that and this trilogy does that for me this is a great one but I strongly suggest you watch these in order if you haven’t yet. They are worth a watch, very clever and amusing in equal doses and there are some other references in there as well. Like Huey Lewis appearing in the first film and cowboys referenced as well. I won’t be happy with myself without mentioning Harold Lloyd at the very beginning of the first movie and then the end of that same movie. Enough from me go enjoy it.
