Spidey is back on my list and I am very glad about it although much lower than I would of probably of liked but my score is much higher than the other critics out there. With both giving this a lowly score starting with a 6.2 IMDb which was followed by Rotten Tomatoes 63%. The keen eyed among you would of noticed that if I hated this movie more then the challenge would have a new film on the list. Well it doesn’t and there is probably a very flimsy reason for that which I will get to a bit later. This movie starred the returning Tobey Maguire in the title role along with Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Rosemary Harris and J. K. Simmons. And another likkle appearance by Bruce Campbell. This was the third Sam Raimi version of Spiderman which was released in 2007 and I believe it was the reviews that done for Sam as this was his last one before they changed both director and leading man. It did turn a profit but it spent upwards to $350m to make and then recouped a tidy $895m at the box office so it couldn’t be down to profit for that decision, which still makes me wonder. Shall we get to the plot.
After the end of Doctor Octopus Peter is planning to propose to Mary Jane. Harry has got amnesia which is convenient. Meanwhile Flint Marko is being pursued by the police after he wants to visit his wife and child and flees again falling into an experimental particle accelerator that fuses his DNA with the sand he is standing on. He becomes the Sandman who can control sand and reform his body with it. A black blob thing has sneaked into Spidey’s apartment and attached itself to his spider suit. He has unwittingly become venom. The alien changes Peter’s personality and he has alienated (HA!) himself from his love Mary Jane. He also exposes a rival photographer at the Bugle for faking photos of Spiderman as a criminal resulting in Eddie (the photographer) getting fired. Eddie is now equally angry with him and Spidey. Peter eventually realises what he has become and rejects the persona of Venom goes and find a new host, namely Eddie. Now Venom has a grudge with Spiderman and he teams up with Sandman and now they are going to 2 v 1 going into an epic battle. Now Spidey needs a back-up if only someone could get their memory back.
I like Sandman as a villain which instantly gets this movie above the second part of the saga. I also like the Venom villain also, I do remember Venom arriving in the comics and then it turning into an alien it was a trouble at the time but it did come through in the end. I like this movie I love the editing with the action quick cut quick cut with a half a second of action. That Sam Raimi loves and he loves it because simply it works. I think a lot of people had grown weary of Toby as Spiderman and that was the find dagger for the end of this version of the franchise. The story ended there. Peter Parker and Spiderman however continued but this particular story finished there.
