Here is a comedy from America desperate to ride on the back of the success of Shawn of The Dead. This movie was one of many films that followed in its footsteps. The difference with this one is that its actually pretty darn good and very funny with it! Which really makes a change compared to the other ones that were created on the back of the success elsewhere. Released in 2009, 5 years after Shawn’s comedy adventure, this was made on a budget of $23.6m and went on to make $102.4m which is pretty fair return also. The critics were mixed with IMDb agreeing with my score (ish) with 7.6/10 and Rotten Tomatoes really loved this movie pushing into the last 10% with a total of 90%. It stars a mere 4 or 5 names with Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone & Abigail Breslin and it is my review I am going to include Bill Murray in there as well. To the plot
The world has turned to crap (again) and zombies are coming back from the grave and are killing and eating the living. This movie predominantly starts by following one character who has his rules for surviving the apocalypse. For example number 1 is cardio, these things are reasonable slow so running will be enough but keeping running would be enough to save your life in many different occasions. He runs into another chap who calls people after where they are heading for so our first character is Columbus and the new man is called Tallahassee. Tallahassee appears to be enjoying killing the zombies a little to much and is not very sociable, but they are both of the opinion that the two will stay alive longer together than on their own. Tallahassee also has an obsession for Twinkies as he hasn’t had one since this all started. In a supermarket they meet two sisters Wichita and Little Rock who were scammers before the end of the world and are continuing now their lives depend on it. They steal Tallahassee’s car leaving both stranded, until they find another car they drive off and then find their old car broken down and get hustled again. Before the four of them finally team up and travel across America each with their own dreams and wants. You can have a pretty good guess at the scrapes they get into. They also bring a lot of humour with them.
This is a very funny film and there if it wasn’t for the gore and the blood dripping from so many scenes this would be another movie to share with friends. My opinion is that if you can take the gore and there isn’t as much as I may of lead you to believe then you will really love this movie. This is the American version of Shawn Of The Dead and it is up there but the difference here is they have a less of a nod to George A Romero compared to Shawn but it is the all American blood guns and thunder machine rolling across the massive expanse that is the states. It is very funny and that is really what makes this movie what it is would this get the Slady recommends and it’s a yes. If you can get through the first 5 mins of gore you’ll be fine.
