OK I am back awake again ready for the next review and counting down to the movie which means they are all loved from here on. I’m not quite there yet so will have to grind through the next 20 or 30 movies but I will announce when I am there and hope it will be good from then on. This independent comedy was released in 2002 an stars Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan, Michael Constantine, Gia Carides, Louis Mandylor, Andrea Martin &

Joey Fatone. Written and starring Nia she handed directing detail over to Joel Zwick and then Gary Coetzman, Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson produced a $5m budget to make the movie and it went on to be a huge success returning $368.7m at the box office. It was liked by the critics with IMDb giving it 6.5/10 and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a popular 76% (not enough for the scoreboard) but popular none the less.

The story follows Fotoula (or Toula) a 30 year old single woman within a large family who are an intrusive and guiding Greek family. They are interested in getting her married and with kids as soon as possible. She meets the man of her dreams and falls in love but how to win him over. She breaks her daddy’s heart by going to college to learn how to use a computer. Then finds a natural within her aunts Travel Agents where Ian returns for another shot at him. He does ask her out for a meal but knowing her family won’t approve of her dating a ‘Non-Greek’ she tells them that she has a pottery class. They continue to date until Ian finally pops the question and she accepts, now all they have to do is convince the rest of the family that this is a good idea. If you think that is going to be easy then you’ve been watching the wrong film.

I’ve said this a few times in these reviews but this is not my type of movie but I enjoyed it. It is very funny and I found myself getting drawn into the story and feeling all of the emotions. The family are similar too many families I have come into contact with and you have to love them for how they are and shake you head for how intrenched they are when it comes to certain thing. This comedy works the girls will love it and the boys will secretly enjoy it as well.
