#167 - Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest – (77%)

The follow up to the Curse of the Black Pearl this one went supernova with its success. Released in 2006 this movie was produced on a budget of $225m which was huge but was justified with a return of over a $1b. Another reminder that I has used the b on purpose there. A moohoosive success in anyone’s eyes. Walt Disney added to its coppers. This one starred Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Nighy, Jack Davenport, Kevin R. McNally & Jonathan Pryce. If you are ready for a shock the Tri scoreboard thing is not troubled but that’s not the shock as a Disney Movie IMDb gave this 7.3/10 but Rotten Tomatoes gave this Disney film a 53%. Not sure how that one slipped the net. As I type it is quite late so I may not remember the plot, but we can try can’t we.

Will and Elizabeth’s wedding is interrupted by Lord Cutler Beckett who has warrants for their arrests due to their connects with Jack Sparrow. Jack is on the run around after being chased by Davy Jones who wants his heart back, Jack needs to return it to avoid having his soul enslaved by Davy. Is this the shortest plot overview ever.

This movie has a bad press, which is evident from the low Rotten Tomatoes but for me these are swashbuckling fun. I enjoyed this movie as much as the first one. I have to admit I have tired to this series of films but not this one. For me it is up there with the first one maybe a percentage point or two between them but if followed on wonderfully well. It was almost as good as the other first movie. Depp plays Sparrow with all the same enthusiasm as before the tricky self serving individual continues and being the best that can be expected of a pirate. This is a fun movie and for me if you loved the first movie then you are going to fall in love with this one as well. I did and even know I am bored of the series this is still a great movie and I’d recommend it.
