#170 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit – (77%)

This 1988 movie was the first and appears to me the only movie bringing Warner Bros and Walt Disney characters together. It is live action predominantly and starred Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Charles Fleischer, Stubby Kaye & Joanna Cassidy. Mel Blanc was available to voice many of his WB characters and there was a whole long list of people to do the Walt Disney characters seeing as this is a Disney movie it should be seen as very honourable of Warner Bros to support it. The scores on the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge has been ruined by Disney on this I think as bot me and IMDb agreed with the 7.7/10 score but as a Disney movie Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 97%. Wow this is an almost perfect movie then! This is backed up with the budget of $50.6m that they got a return of $329.8m which was a success. I will move onto the plot.

Set in the 1940’s in LA where toons actually act in cinema movies along with live action people. They interact with people and work and live in Hollywood. PI Eddie Valiant and his brother Teddy once worked with toons on many cases but after his brother was killed by a toon Eddie has fallen into booze and lost his fun side of life and vowed to never help toons ever again. Eddie is hired by RK Maroon who is worried about his toons actor performances and thinks his wife maybe cheating on him so get Eddie’s to investigate his wife to see if she is playing away. He secretly films her playing patty-cake which a business man in her changing room. He shows this to Roger who is devastated and flees. The next morning the business man is found dead with a toon safe on his head. With all evidence suggestion that Roger the Rabbit has done the deed. Judge Doom sends his Toon Patrol weasels to bring Roger in. Roger is desperate and asks Eddie to help clear his name. Thus breaking his vow of not helping toons, he reluctantly agrees and the story goes on. They then have many adventures on route of not only clearing Rogers name but tracking down the killer. After being framed for murder Roger is fighting for his name and his life. They go off into Warner Bros land and Disney where they run into all manner of historic and iconic cartoon characters.

This is a good movie and seeing the behind the scenes before seeing the movie was fascinating. Seeing a metal pole squirting water next to Bob Hoskins and then seeing the cartoon rabbit squirting water from his mouth in the actual film. It was so well done and it was great to see how well that all came together in a great movie. The problem I have with this movie is it just isn’t my type of movie. There are a bit too many clichés in there. There are some really funny sequences and jokes are great but then to have a toon playing a human at the end just didn’t work for me. I love Chris Lloyd and I haven’t seen him in a movie that I haven’t enjoyed him in a role and this is no exception. This is a great movie but not a high nineties for me, I enjoyed it I truly did and I would recommend this movie to anyone and I would go as far to say that you will enjoy it but there is something missing that I cannot quite put my finger on but its stopping me from putting this in the high 80’s and the score for this one is right for me. I feel I may return to this movie and add to my comments.
