The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is a story I read as a child and one that I remember with fondness. I also vaguely remember an animated movie or show trying to tell this story which did not really work for me at the time so when this one came out it went for the epic story mode that I believe this story deserved and it delivered one of the best attempts yet. We won’t be troubling the scorers of the Tri-Critic as IMDb only gave this epic a 6.9/10, whilst Rotten Tomatoes was nearly on par with me giving it a 76%. Released in 2005 this movie follows the 1950’s novel by CS Lewis and is one of the first to do so as a live action movie. CS Lewis wrote seven books of which three were made into movies but this was the first. It stars William Moseley. Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Tilda Swinton, James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent and Liam Neeson. It certainly had the epic standard of budget to create the film with $180m it went on to reap $745m back which no doubt helped with the next movie or two.
Oh, I forgot I have to try and give a short plot now. OK here goes four kids get sent away from London to live in a house in the country. Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy discover a route to a mysterious fantasy land by going through a wardrobe. Lucy goes through first and meets Mr Tumnus a faun who invites her back to his house for tea. The faun tells her about the ruler of the lands the White Witch is threatened by humans. Peter then comes through and walks straight into the white witch who offers him Turkish Delight and gains his favour. Peter teams up with the evil White Witch whilst the rest of the gang teams up with the Lion who is building a army to take down the evil witch down. So how is this story going to end with the family divided and so is the entire realm of Narnia how is this all going to come together. Who knows!?!?
Well to find the best answer to that is to go and read the book. I would recommend the book over the movie but if you have already read the book then this version is going to help bring the book to life. It is a great story and a great version of it. The book was aiming for epic as it competing with the likes of Lord of the Rings and other epic stories and for me he succeeded. This is another story that takes me back to my youth but this time not as a movie I remember but as a book I actually read. I CAN READ!!! See I am full of shocks here aren’t I (I know my writing my suggest differently)
