Not exactly sure how to label this movie, could be seen as horror, could be seen as a murder mystery, could be a comedy, could be sci-fi, I just don’t know? Released in 1999 and directed by Tim Burton all suitable gothy dark and mysterious elements were used to the full. For a Burton movie you could guess some of the starring list which includes Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper Van Dien and Jeffrey Jones. With the music from Danny Elfman. It was produced on a budget of $70m and went on to make $207m at the box-office which is a success in anybody’s eyes. The Tri-critic sync isn’t happening either as my 77% is too high compared to Rotten Tomatoes 68% and IMDb was in the middle with 7.3/10 IMDb.

This supernatural gothic horror come murder mystery is centred around the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow. Where a police officer called Ichabod Crane is dispatched from New York to the hamlet of Sleepy Hollow to investigate the series of decapitations. Using some questionable scientific techniques he arrives to investigate the murders. Convinced that the superstitions are just that and that a normal human being is actually behind the crimes. Steadily the movie serves up a little clue here and there and slowly it uncovers a link between the victims and the impossible elements of the killing point strongly to a genuine ghost riding a horse without a head and a flaming sword. He discovers a Tree of the Dead which must be the grave of the horseman and the skull is missing which he works out must mean that the person with the skull is controlling the horseman, but who?

See why I cannot how to pigeon hole this movie and that is probably why I like it. I am not sure if I mentioned before but Michael Gambon is in this movie with Christopher Lee and Alun Armstrong puts in a performance as well. This is spooky and sums up Tim Burton’s movies the only difference is I cannot see Helena Bonar Carter anywhere? So there is something wrong. This is a ghost story with a modern twist it brings in other elements and makes it’s a who done it with the person holding the skull controls the ghost and this ghost won’t stop until it gets to its victim. All good here!
