#177 - Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child – (77%)

Writer's picture: MyersMyers

Freddy Kruger finally makes an appearance in this list and he begins much higher than many of the Michael Myers films despite me loving the Halloween franchise more than the Elm Street. Thinking about it this is really bizarre to me. Freddy was the first horror baddie that scared the sh*t out of me and many of the sequels followed in a similar suite for Freddy. He was lucky enough to keep the production values that the original had and they continued with a rough theme of Freddy dying at the end yet coming back for the next movie. This one is the fifth movie and quite probably the worst one of the original franchise sequels. It is not just me thinking that as the scores are low from both the typical critics are low as well IMDb gave it 5.2/10 to get it a smidge over 50% but Rotten Tomatoes were not so kind giving this movie 32%. Released in 1989 just so it could squeeze into the 80’s horror list and back in those days $8m budget to make it was ok and it did go on to make $22.1m at the box office. It starred as always Robert Englund and Lisa Wilcox, with Kelly Jo Minter, Erika Anderson and Danny Hassel.

Being the fifth movie in the franchise I will make the assumption you are aware of Freddy Kruger. That he appears in peoples dreams and if he kills you in there then he kills you for real. He likes to terrify you and feeds on the fear to grow stronger and kill more etc. We leap into the fifth movie which follows on from the fourth with the two survivors growing together. Alice and Dan are of the assumption that Freddy is gone for good until Alice starts to see visions of nuns and various scary signs. Eventually she finds her way back to the asylum where she watches a nun give birth to a gross rotten baby which escapes and she follows. It goes to the church where it grows into a full human looking like Freddy has he found a way to get back out of the dream world and into this one to terrify a whole new wave of people.

To be honest the plot is as flimsy one and not just my interpretation. I think this movie got such a high score from me based on the other movies rather than this one. If this was the first movie it would not of gone on to make any more movies as this is the worst one in the franchise even those following were better than this effort. I think this was the movie that showed that the original story had run its course and it was time to start to look elsewhere. It was pretty much the worst effort of a series that I cannot recommend but this character scared me as a kid and there is still an element that reflects back on that fear that puts me on edge just to watch one of these movies.
