Have you ever sat late of an evening coming into lockdown situation and thought to yourself why don’t you create a list of movies that you and then shorten that list to those movie that you have seen and then declare that you are going to write a review of each thinking that you could write a word or two on each and then realise that you are looking at close to 1000 words per movie each. You must devise a way to put all the movies in a list you give each one a score out of 100% and then you reassign then into a scored list. You put a ranking against them and decide to work from the worst to the best and finally you past halfway in the list you are working through. Then suddenly realised that at gone 1am one morning about 3 months ago you gave the movie Jack Frost a score of 75%. Now all those months later you see here looking at the screen on a weekend morning saying to yourself what the hell was you thinking! OK here is my feeble attempt to justify what the hell my brain was doing on that evening giving this movie a 76% rating and putting it above all the others.
Honestly, I got nothing! This movie was released in 1998 and was produced on a budget of a reported $40m to $85m depending on who you are speaking to about the size of the loss when you see it made $34.6m at the box office the public didn’t like it. So we turn to my fellow critics to back me up with a random high score with IMDb giving it 5.4/10 and unfortunately Rotten Tomatoes hit the nail on the head with a 19%. So maybe its now time to bend the knee… well maybe. Starring Michael Keaton, Kelly Preston, Mark Addy & Joseph Cross although Keaton only appears on screen for the early part of the movie.
The story is that of a father being too focused on his work but rather than being a slave to a big conglomerate he is the head of a music band and its his passion and it certain cases to the detriment of his family. He promised to make up for it by taking the family away for Christmas but forgets and goes to an important make or break gig with his band. Realising his mistake he borrows a car and drives back through a snow storm. He crashes the car and is killed but returns to the world a year later as a snowman his son built and plays his harmonica to. The snowman and his son reconnect and he starts to show the father he could have been and his son starts to show his love of his dad and music. They have adventures together and they reaffirm the bond they should have had before the death.
I enjoyed this movie and know that I am in the minority but I have to add that I think that 76% is too big a score for this one. I like the idea of having a second opportunity to speak to a dead relative and have fun with the spirit of them. Giving the chance to re-bond and say your goodbyes maybe plays on my heartstrings to remember movies better than they probably deserve when months later you have to right a review and justify the score you gave. On this occasion I am not convinced I can and as such I cannot recommend you watch this one as it has some sentimental points and some laughs but it is a mediocre movie at best.
