#198 - Monty Python's - The Meaning Of Life – (76%)

Back when the Monty Python boys were all still with us and combining into the comedy force that was Monty Python they made some movies three or four movies depending on your opinion if you count it as three or more is down to you as I won’t argue with you either way.

Starring the usual crew of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and the lovable Michael Palin. This movie was more like their TV show than any of the other movies as it was a series of sketches with a theme running through it as opposed to just random sketches. Released in 1983 and produced on a tight budget of $9m it went on to return $14.9m at the box office. From a critical point and I know you are keen to see the scores on the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge and there is an Eleven points difference. This is because of me and IMDb being very much in tune with this one, as they gave it a 7.5/10 IMDb but the Rotten Tomatoes mob loved it and it isn’t a Disney movie as well giving it 10 more than me with 86%. Ok need to switch the brain on for this as I attempt to explain the plot.

There isn’t a plot! I am very tempted to leave it there but I will attempt to give you an overview of the meaning of life. It is a series of sketches which looks at the meaning of life and you take a journey looking at birth, childhood, adult growth, adult life and finally death and it is seen through the Monty Python Prism. This movie has many more songs than the other movies and they are dotted throughout the film and there are some iconic scenes within this movie as well. That being completely honestly stand out more than the film itself with Mr Creosote standing out more than most, but he does not stand alone as much as the songs do. There are so many elements to this that I could explain that would ruin it if you haven’t seen it yet, so I won’t go too far here and then try to control my ramblings below.

In my view many people like the Python crew but they can be seen as marmite as you love their madness or you find it annoying. For me I love it and most of what they did, there are sketches (in my opinion) should never seen the light of day but they hit the funny madness many more times in comparison. This movie pulls together many of their greatest stand alone sketches along with many great songs as well. Directed by Python’s own Terry Jones and full respect to him for many aspects of this movie. For me this movie sums up Monty Python as there is a lack of story line but more of a theme and right in the middle of the theme there is an abstract sketch called the middle of the film and it was just weird, it is at this point I get up and go make a tea before returning for the next funny bit. That is how to take Monty Python they throw comedy at you at a pace of 100mph does it all stick, no most of it does then let people decide what they like. Sums up the movie. If you haven’t seen this movie then I strongly suggest you do. It is worth your attention at least just once as many people refer to this movie in popular culture and has lived beyond its closing titles… and don’t get too confused by the accountancy movie before the main feature just enjoy that too.
