This 2007 film starred Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Nighy, Chow Yun-fat, Geoffrey Rush, Tom Hollander, Jack Davenport, Kevin R. McNally & Jonathan Pryce and was a huge success at the box office. With a massive production budget of $300m it had to generate a lot and it did with a $961m return at the box office. This is the third no fourth no it is 100% the third movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean and too be honest I have kind of lost track of the movies now and I think that even Hollywood is running low on enthusiasm for another one. It was met with mixed reaction and even now there is a bit of a divide with the tri-critic vector thing as IMDB gave it a creditable 7.1/10 whilst Rotten Tomatoes hated it with a low 44%, can’t be a Disney movie then… Oh it is!! How’d that score happen? Well it ruined the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge, so I will with a huff move onto the plot.

Jack begins in Davy Jones locker and the rest of the crew decide to go and bring him back. To do so they first have to compete with new anti-pirate laws and meeting of the major pirates before travelling off to Singapore to speak to Captain Sao Feng who apparently has a map to navigate to the locker. The crew strike a deal and sail off to rescue Jack from the nether world of locker. They return and are attacked by Beckett (the guy who created the anti-pirate laws) and Sao Feng. Elizabeth is captured by Sao Feng believing her to be Calypso, Jack tries to capture the Dutchman whilst Sao Feng is mortally wounded and appoints Elizabeth his successor as the Pirate Lord. They are instantly captured by Beckett who ties them in the brig where they witness Will’s father Bootstrap Bill losing to the Dutchman’s curse he tells Elizabeth that Will must not come for him and I am going to stop there as I am confused and no doubt you are as well.

This is a good swashbuckling movie with action and adventure a plenty throughout the thread of the story is basically open season for each character to backstab and do deals a plenty that will benefit themselves as much as possible. Even if its just a case of being left alive is there benefit of the deal. I think this was the one for me that started to wane with the franchise don’t get me wrong this is an entertaining movie and one to be watched and enjoyed but this franchise was never one for me it was one that I enjoyed but I never loved the way I did with others. It could be my age and it was a current series that I couldn’t get into the story arc was not there as it seemed not be an arc but more of a straight line. Lord of the Rings was 3 x 3 hour movies which had an arc. I could not see the end of this one and it became a cash cow (which is not a bad thing – in any imagination) but coming up with new and inventive ways of continuing the story must have been a struggle and it starts to begin to feel that they have idea’s of this would look spectacular but how can we force the story for this to actually happen. Then you begin to have problems as you have moved away from what made the movie great in the first place. So would I suggest watching this, my answer would be did you enjoy the previous two then definitely, if you didn’t enjoy the others then now is the time to stop and move onto pastures new.
