Well you couldn’t get a more contrary movie with this one after following Wall-E this movie may be frowned upon now as it stars Kevin Spacey and apparently you not allowed to mention his name anymore. Well I am going to have to, to navigate this little review then. This movie was released in 1995 along with him it stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow and John C. McGinley. Produced on a budget of $33m this movie went on to make a sizable $327.3m at the box office. This movie is well liked and I think that is due to the twist and the ha ha got you for the audience in fact of the Tri-Critic challenge I’ve let the side down as the other two gave it more than I with Rotten Tomatoes giving a very creditable score of 81% but that was even less than the IMDb gang who gave it a 8.6/10, which is very impressive.

The story is about a cop and his partner investigating a series of murders. Morgan Freeman plays Somerset a cop nearing his retirement and his new Partner David Mills played by Bitt who has just moved to the city with his pregnant wife (Gwyneth) who hasn’t yet told her husband about the baby as she is worried about bringing the child up in the city. After becoming friendly she tells Somerset who says he had the problem with his ex and to tell Mills if she decides to keep the baby. Then the murders start with the first victim a fat bloke (no not me!) who has been forced to eat and eat until his stomach explodes, killing him (Gluttony). The next victim is a defence attorney who had a pound of his own flesh cut out of him representing greed. The seven deadly sins are being ticked off one by one here right. There was enough clues to track down the murderers apartment where the cops go to find a man ties to bed who is still just alive representing sloth there are pictures of this man taken everyday showing that the killer has been planning this for a long time. Well other murders keep happening until five of the seven sins have been chalked off before the murderer just shows up at the police station covered in blood, confessing and saying he will take them to the final places of his last two victims and I will stop there.

I guess that the twist in the story for this movie is what people love about this movie. It has that aha you got me moment that people love. It is very gory in places and I remember being a bit shocked about the close-up of the discovered bodies through the movie when expecting a murder mystery. It is a very clever movie, even though the evil villain ultimately is the mastermind behind the whole plan, without giving too much away. He has planned this to the detail and his scheme has almost come off completely. For me the shock of seeing the murder victims was a hell of a shock but the twist and turns of the story really makes this a great one and if you haven’t seen it, I would recommend at least one viewing.
