#211 - Venom – (75%)

This is my son’s film and he loved it. I don’t know why as he has started to show a bit of interest in superheroes and Venom seems to be his choice. He has followed this up with a comic book coming into his possession and potentially an interest in this character but I will have to wait and see on that one. This movie was released in 2018 this was something that Sony wanted to run with after the character appeared in Spiderman 3 and finally got the green light in 2016 when production began, it cost $116m and went on to make $856.1m at the box-office. Which in anyone’s terms is a huge success ker-ching! So, the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge should be really close but this is not a Disney movie so that could be an issue, well it is as I gave it the highest score with IMDb second 8 points behind and Rotten Tomatoes gave a non-Disney movie a whopping 30%. I am not saying any more on that busy now. It stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze & Reid Scott and runs for over to hours and what they squeeze into it is summarised as follows.

Venom is an alien that covers a human body and can take control of the mind. Venom landed on earth and took over Spiderman which was a bit of a retcon as Spidey had changed his colour and suit but there was a bit of an outcry and they wrote the story of it being an alien and had it changed back and Venom was born. This movie turns this villain into a hero of sorts, you could say anti-hero. In this story investigative journalist Eddie Brock is down on his luck because he had investigated Life Foundation CEO Carlton Drake and gives classified documents to his fiancé Anne an attorney preparing a lawsuit defence for Life Foundations. Eddie confronts Carlton about the trials, which leads to both Eddie and Anne lose their jobs and is the beginning of Eddie being down on his luck. Six months later there is another lead that comes Eddie linking him back to Life Foundations and he ends up back in the lab with one of Carltons assistant’s and the weird space blob which Carlton had been testing on humans but they keep dying so they need more. Well this blob sticks to Eddie and starts an internal conversation within his mind. It can also take over his body and turn him into the black exterior of Venom we know and love. There is another blob from outer space that then takes over Carlton and apparently there are millions of those things that are on their way to collect Venom and take him back for punishment. So now there is an all-out war. This movie is an action-packed superhero film and there are many fights and chase segments which makes everyone happy.

That’s enough of that business, this has all the feel of a boy’s movie which should be why I like it. Well this is not the Venom I know and loved this is now an alien that is battling other aliens and battling against the bad guys. NO, he should be the bad guy and this is something that I really struggled to get over but to be honest I did get over it and I did enjoy this movie. It is very action packed with plenty of fights and chases throughout, the bad guy is evil enough for anyone to hate so this ticks a lot of boxes. Would I recommend you watching this movie? Honestly, I was surprised myself with the answer of Yes, I do. It is not the movie I thought it should be but it also not the movie I was expecting it to be, which is a good thing. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie and I hope you will be too.
