Was I drunk when I came up with that score or could it be that they were stoned when they came up with this film? Those questions plus many others not answered here on our blog. It was originally released in 1940 and officially made on a budget of $2.28m which back then is a sizeable amount, now the box-office figure is not strictly clear as it is between $76m to $83m now this is due to a limited release originally and then issue of it not being shipped to Europe so had subsequent releases in the 60’s and again in another format in the 90’s so maybe the figure is inflated but that is what is reported so that’s what I put here.

This isn’t going to be a very long review particularly as the plot is going to be a short one and you will see why now. There is plot. Should I stop there? No, I will try and give you a bit of a flavour of this movie. This is back in the late 1930’s they were looking at what they could do and see what advances they could make. So, they took an orchestra and had them play some classic tunes from Toccata and Fugue in D Minor to The Nutcracker suite and many others and then they wanted to see if they animate something to go along with it and then have that roll out for over 2 hours and everyone is happy. It was seen as a triumph and launched Mickey Mouse to stardom as one on the main characters in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice section.

I did say this was going to be a short review and we are moving rapidly onto the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge which is ruined by RT’s high score, with IMDb giving this a 7.8/10 so just 3 points away from me. Which ruined the chance was those in Walt Disney pockets Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 94%. My guess for the reason behind this inflated score is that there funding that goes from Disney to Rotten Tomatoes and you would be extremely surprising for a Disney movie to be given a low score on there. Even if they have to keep hitting the reset button on the scores until it goes the way they like. They have changed over the years to become the creature they are now and one that I don’t particularly like very much. They have stopped being the company that was associated with children and creating some beautiful movies that pushed the boundaries of technology and created some big fans to this preachy, we are better than you and will talk down to you about our values which are more morally better than yours so take note and listen up. Well my opinion is that if it kept doing what it used to Disney would still be seen in that light today. They are not the organisation they used to be and they made plenty of money the old way as opposed to talk down to the fan’s the attitude they have today. Which is not telling you that to appreciate this movie you need to appreciate how it came about and how amazing it was to put this together in the first place get your popcorn and set yourself up to be amazed if not its just a cartoon to music.
