Oliver Stone turned his attention the assassination of JFK and this movie is based on the book ‘On the Trail of the Assassins'. This cost $40m to created released in 1991 it went on to make $205.4m at the box office. It caused a lot of controversy when released with various political members raising concerns of implied things here and references there. It was reasonably well received and was a success in terms of bums on seats and money generated which is why movies are made aren’t they? In fact, I gave this movie the lowest score with 75% so no work for the tri-scorer to worry about as IMDb gave it a creditable 8/10 and an even better score of 84% from Rotten Tomatoes. It is one of the few movies on my list to star the first name on this list of stars…Kevin Costner, Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones, Laurie Metcalf, Gary Oldman, Michael Rooker, Jay O. Sanders & Sissy Spacek all starred in the movie.
The plot is about the assassination of JFK and begins with footage of the president’s reign and the points which may have led to his death. This movie really begins after the Warren Report when Jim Garrison the New Orleans District Attorney decides he should reopen the case. The movie follows the investigation and then the trial of Clay Shaw who they believed was linked to a conspiracy to assassinate the JFK and they have to prove that JFK was not killed by Oswald with his three shots but someone from behind the Grassy Knowle claimed the shots and Oswald was set up to take the fall. The investigate names many different names and they finally settled on the links to Clay and take him to trial. The result of the trial is famous so I won’t need to spoil it here for you.
I think I was too young to appreciate this film when I brought it and watched it. For those that love a conspiracy this is the movie for you! If you think the American government and legal structure is corrupt and then this is the movie for you. Does this movie prove anything well that would be telling and the house of cards that a conviction would have seen collapse would be heard around the world also... This is a very clever and thought-provoking movie which appears to be what Oliver Stone goes for. He is very reluctant to pull any punches when he directs a movie and he doesn’t here as he looks at the evidence presented to him and the testimony of those involved in the perceived cover up but is this movie taking the conclusion first and then setting out to put everything into place to fit the pieces together for its own ends? Well with any conspiracy or cover up story it all boils down to what you believe before as I don’t think your mind will be changed either way by a movie. Still a gripping movie and worth a watch.
