Well here we are with the first film in the duo that is Happy Feet one and two but this was the original and probably the film I know much better of the two. There is a message in there even if it is slightly hidden. Released in 2006 and created using a budget of $100m it went on to make $384.3m at the box-office, which has to been seen as a success. As with many animated movies of late there is a wealth of stars giving the services of their voices here with Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving, Anthony LaPaglia, Magda Szubanski & Steve Irwin. It was successful enough to turn the profit into a second movie and enough merch sales to fill an island in south pacific. Shall I just move onto the plot or explain that we are not scaring the scorers of the Tri-Critic Sync Challenge as me & Rotten Tomatoes (possibly for a change) are on the same page with a 75%- 76% split. The disappointment in our ranks is IMDb who gave this movie a lowly 6.4/10 giving us a 12-point split so not close enough.
To attract a mate each of the Emperor Penguins sings a ‘Heartsong’ to woo a mate and get there end away. Sorry Kids let the standards slip there! One of eggs give life to Mumble who doesn’t know how to sing but slowly learns that he can dance in the tap-dancing kind and you can see where this movie is going. He is nearly killed a few times but as an adult it’s a leopard seal that nearly gets him. He escapes and meets up with a group of Adelie penguins called the ‘Amigos’ who take on his dance moves and let him join their group. Gloria is a sought-after female Emperor Penguin and one of the ‘Amigos’ tries to help Mumble woo her but singing while he mimes which doesn’t work. In desperation he starts to tap dance and she actually falls for him. He then ends up chasing a boat and ends up ‘rescued’ and put in a Sea life like gig where he is locked up all day. I think that is a suitable low point to end the plot with him stuck miles from home and still unable to sing.
I am now supposed to tell you what was wrong with this movie and why it isn’t so much further up my list than 227th in my list. Well I cannot tear strips off this movie as it’s a lovely nice kid friendly movie that I would recommend to anyone. This is a beautiful movie both visually and in its feeling. Is it my type of movie again? Nope!! Would I watch this movie right at this second? Yes! Why because it’s a good movie and not much else is on. Would I choose this movie over the next 226 movies then I guess not. Is there a lot wrong with this film nope with the except of that this was not made for me and I don’t hold that against it but I would recommend that if haven’t seen this movie to give it go. Yep go for it!
