Oh, dear what the hell there is a girlie movie in the middle of the two hundred’s! What was I thinking? well I will tell you what I was thinking! Released in 2016 some 14 years after the original movie which was a success. This movie was produced on $18m and went on to make $90.6m which is a tidy profit in my eyes. The film starred Nia Vardalos, John Corbett
Lainie Kazan, Michael Constantine, Andrea Martin, Ian Gomez & Elena Kampouris. I will be moving onto the plot now.
I will go with the assumption you’ve seen the first film as Toula Portokalos-Miller’s life is crumbling away from what she had. Mainly due to the recession. Her travel agents has closed down along with the families dry cleaning business. The only business still open is the family restaurant that is still being run by Gus (her father). So, to be able squeeze the story into the title of the movie, they discover that Gus and Maria’s marriage is not lawful as the priest had not signed the certificate so they should have to go through the ceremony again. Meanwhile Toula’s daughter has had enough of being smothered by the family and that the family is involved in everything for her life and wants to go to college/school/university or whatever it’s called in the states as far away as possible. Gus wants to just get on with the wedding and Maria sees this as the opportunity to have the wedding she never had and will not just have another wedding. Maria wants Gus to actually propose again and then organise a Big Fat Greek Wedding (see what I did there?). I think the plot is how they come to terms with all these problems and that’s enough for you.
I enjoyed this movie and gave it a score based on what I felt. You may think my score is very inflated particularly when you look at the other scores out there. See I hadn’t forgotten on this one as it was given 6/10 IMDb which is pretty damn good compared to the 27% from Rotten Tomatoes. I feel I should add that this is never going to be my type of film and would never risk being an entrant into my top 10 of my lists but I feel it is worthy of the score I’ve given it. It’s entertaining and funny in parts and that’s enough for me.
