Released in 2004 this sequel was 2 years after the original movie and set two years after the first movie. This one like the first is directed by Sam Raimi and has a guest appearance by the legend Bruce Campbell as well. Although he is probably only on screen for a minute. The film actually stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Alfred Molina, Rosemary Harris & Donna Murphy. Music by Danny Elfman, who is among a group of recognisable names involved in this movie. For Sam Raimi he was given another large budget to make this movie with $200m it went onto make $789m at the box-office which is not only a huge success there but it was also liked by the critic with a 7.3/10 from the IMDb and then me before the Rotten Tomatoes weighed in with a massive 93%. Shall I move onto the plot and then explain why I didn’t give this a 93%.
Two years after the death of the green goblin. Peter Parker is attending a public demonstration by the head of Oscorp’s genetic and scientific research division of a new fusion powered robot tentacle arms with AI. Well obviously, there is a power serge and the arms fuse themselves onto Dr Octavius (the head mentioned in the previous sentence). Not only are the arms fused to his spinal cord they also work their way into his brain where the AI is in competition with his normal control. Peter’s love of Mary-Jane is slightly on the rocks as she is planning to marry John Jameson son of Bugle owner Jonah Jameson. After the hospital try to remove the arms from Dr Octavius in a scene that was straight from Sam Raimi’s back catalogue as the arms kill anyone trying to split them up and with the AI taking over, he escapes and the arms give instructions on how he can take over the city. Jonah give him the name of Dr Octopus and his reign of criminal activity. Peter’s friend Norman Osbourne and son of the Green Goblin is still suffering from the death of his father but has still inherited his father’s fortune. Dr Octopus knows that only Oscorp has access to the power he needs to keep the arms working and to complete his diabolical scheme. When DocOc arrives and demands this of Norman he agrees if the Doctor delivers Spiderman to him as he blames Spiderman for his father’s death. Should I stop there is that enough of the story to whet your appetite?
OK I am saying OK as I am not sure where to start for this section and I am going to go with this is a good film and one that I would enjoy to watch. But it’s not my favourite spiderman movie and not by a long way my favourite Sam Raimi movie either. Now I think this is down to a pure bias and preconception ahead of the movie. In my view the movie is well acted, I know Toby Maguire is not liked by many out there that like to point that out to anyone who wants to listen. I don’t agree with that as my beef with the film is that I never liked Dr Octopus as a villain. I couldn’t see the point of it, it just didn’t work from me. I loved the goblins and I also liked Dr Doom who I remember from the cartoons and it maybe the comics or the cartoons but I just don’t like this villain. There is nothing wrong with this movie in my opinion and it’s a great superhero movie which is as good as any other out there so don’t let my history of not liking the villain put you off. Oh, and it’s not that I don’t like him because he is a villain. I loved Venom, Goblins (already mentioned) Sandman is my favourite Spidey villain who has been overlooked so many times so I was pleased to finally see him on film in the third one I just didn’t like some block with four extendable arms as much of a villain. Now you go see for yourself.
