#245 - Barnyard – (74%)

Finally, we get to Barnyard, it has crept just under the 250 mark and a score of 74% to boot. Why am I saying that about this kid’s animated movie? Well this is by far my son’s current favourite movie and it has been for a while and when my family talk about this list they keep asking me where is it and whether I’ve done my review of it. They are expecting rubbish review from me so they will be a bit surprised by the 74% score and the words that are about to appear below. Shall we begin?

This 2006 CGI animated movie was created on a budget of $51m it went on to gross $116.5m which to me is a success. Although the critics didn’t really like it so there is no chance of us three matching as IMDb gave it 5.5/10 and it got even worse from Rotten Tomatoes with a poultry 22%. The movie uses the voices of many stars including Kevin James, Courteney Cox, Sam Elliott, Danny Glover, Wanda Sykes, Andie MacDowell and David Koechner, with supporting roles done by Jeffrey Garcia, Tino Insana, Dom Irrera, Cam Clarke, Rob Paulsen, S. Scott Bullock, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Fred Tatasciore and Lloyd Sherr. The story? Well I will get to that next.

Otis is an adopted bull he is wild and carefree he is out to enjoy his life. His adoptive father Ben is the leader of the Barnyard and the rest of the farm animals look up to him. Otis doesn’t much care for that he is more interested in partying and regularly interrupts meetings by doing stupid things. One night he should be on watch with his father but manages to talk himself out of it. A pack of coyotes attack the farm but as a solo bull trying to fight them off Ben loses the fight and dies in front of Otis the next morning (yes, it is a kid’s movie). Otis is elected his father’s replacement as leader of the farm which he still interested in, he is more interested in having fun and flirting with a cow. One night he hears the coyote pack and runs after them to avenge his father but he is weak and outnumbered and they say they will help themselves to whatever animal they want whenever they want and if Otif interferes they will kill them all. So Otif decides the best thing for all is to just leave the farm completely.

Now that’s not the end of the story but that is all you are going to get out of me on here. Reading this I assume you are asking why have I gone with a 74% compared to 22% elsewhere the answer in a word is Sean. That’s my son’s name and he love’s this movie. It feels like the only movie that he returns to and watches again and again. Now there maybe months or a year between but it comes back and he seems to enjoy it as much as he ever did. Now the fact they are cows with male voices or bulls with udders is missed on everyone in the production team just makes its funnier to me. It is funny and it can entertain both adults and obviously kids as well. I would recommend you give one a chance as you may just enjoy it.
