#248 - Battle For The Planet Of The Apes – (74%)

This list reaches the end of the Planet of The Apes before all the films have been reviewed. According to many this is worst movie in the story but I cannot get past that second movie thing myself and this pip’s the other movie in my humble opinion. This was the grand finale of the five-movie story released in 1973 made on a budget that was rumoured to be scrapped together of $1.7m. It still grossed $8.8m which is a profit to me but the critics didn’t appreciate this movie very much with IMDb give a very middle of the road of 5.5/10 and Rotten Tomatoes were really not happy with a score of 36%. Shall we get the stars listed here, shall we? Well there’s Roddy McDowall, Claude Akins, Natalie Trundy, Severn Darden, Lew Ayres, Paul Williams, and John Huston.

The plot has been redone in most of the new movies that have been made and no I don’t understand the end of the first remake. The story follows four different factions all with their own way of thinking. The Ape’s are in control and leaders with the support of the orangutan’s for science and advice. The Gorilla’s led by Aldo who are effectively the muscles and police or military of the group. The remaining humans after the nuclear war that had wipe most of the them off the planet that now have menial jobs and effective slaves to the apes. The fourth element are mutated humans living underground in a city they have created themselves. The relations between the four are that the Gorilla’s hate the humans and want them all to live in cages. The Apes are looking for to keep the status the same and the humans are looking for a better life, to be equals. They hear that there is footage of original ape available in the city under planet. They set up a team to search the underground city inhabited by the mutant humans. They are spotted and the mutants believe they are planning an attack so start planning a counter offensive and attack the apes. Do I go on here? I think I’ve laid this out enough don’t you. I have to add that the film is set 600 years after the story you predominantly see as it’s a wrap’s around with the story introduced as a ape telling a tale and then finished back there with the conclusion of the story.

Why do I like this movie because it is a good story of oppression and conflict with the right outcome. Equality and compassion should always win out. If you look at the original Star Wars story the evil focus is taken from Darth Vader and he is redeemed at the end and not killed off. This is the conclusion of 5 movies and a spin off tv series and they basically pocketed most of the cash and were concluding the story where worlds had blow up and nuclear war had ruined it completely. Equally if you cannot get the point of equality, violence is wrong, nuclear war is stupid, getting along with each other as equals based on intelligence and discussion is something the post covid-19 world will need to learn. I hope it does so the easiest way without the conflict that is currently being conveyed in the world. I don’t know where the world will be by the time this review is uploaded to the blog but I hope it has calmed down and gained some understanding and appreciation that we are all the same and should be working together.
