Right I am going to say that this must be the youngest movie so far on the list and it may well be the youngest on here but I cannot be sure. This come out last year (2019) back when you could hug family members and pollute the planet with Car juice spewing exhaust fumes everywhere just to get to work and back. Now I am sat staring at a screen all day and all night as I type this gem. I will tell you that seeing as I have no subscribers, I will offer a free gift to one random subscriber when I post the 200th movie.
OK moving back to this movie. I was about to jump straight into my views of this movie but I will hold back to the end where I will rip open the plot holes in this movie, it was released (as mentioned) in 2019 and for me the critics were never going to give this one a chance and they scored it 63% from Rotten Tomatoes who actually gave it a higher score than the 5.8/10 from IMDb. It was produced on a budget of $10m and went on to take $45m at the box office so that to me is a success when you make more than double your costs then you are in the profits side of the process and do not underestimate the difference that really makes. This is a remake or a reimagining of the 1988 movie of the same name. The voice of Brad Douriff is legendary to this role to me so to have this reimagined was always going to tough so which actors did they get for this movie? Well they got Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, Brian Tyree Henry, Tim Matheson, David Lewis and for the voice of Chucky they got my childhood hero Mark Hamill.
The plot is remotely similar to original movie but it is very subtly different. Kaslan Corporation has launched a Buddi doll (not Buddy or a Good Guy) but in Vietnam the Dolls are being made and one worker is fired for not performing to a high enough level. So, he decides to wreak havoc by reprogramming his last doll to ignore safety protocols and then he commits suicide. The doll ends up in the hands of the poor but loving mother of Andy Barclay who is a single mum but who does have a boyfriend who Andy isn’t that keen of. So, the doll has glowing red eyes where all the others have blues eyes. The quirky-ness of the doll helps Andy make a couple of friends but the machine takes him literally with every comment so when the cat scratches Andy and he makes a comment. Chucky decides to protect his best buddy and kills the cat. This sets up the rest of the plot with Andy’s dislike of this mother’s boyfriend he needs to choose his words carefully when he is annoyed by him.
I think that give you enough of the story with the new age Chucky being technically advanced it can tap into the internet and view camera’s and take control of electronic gadget. I felt that this version of Chucky was very different from the original version but bizarrely it worked. For me he felt like a Frankenstein’s monster feel about him rather than the psycho killer of the original movies. There were also so plot holes and some death scenes that were clearly included just to give the writers a bit of how could we kill someone in a new and inventive way. Which Child’s Play used to do so I guess we should have expected that. So, with the plot holes and pointless deaths and deaths that were easy to escape so required the victim to help kill themselves (yes that does happen if you watch carefully enough). I think I have painted the film in a bad enough light so I can move onto why the hell did I give it a score of 74% and here is the shocker paragraph for you.
I actually enjoyed the movie. I brought this movie as the need to complete the set and thought that I was going to watch a car crash of a disaster. I was really excited when I saw the first teaser advert and then I saw the image of Chucky and my heart sunk I went from that point to being so pleasantly surprised by this movie that I had to give this a good score. Is it anywhere as good as the original – NO!! but this is a good movie and I would recommend it! If you have to choose between this and the original there is one winner. If you have a choice between this movie and any of the Star Wars movies episode 7 to 9 equally no contest this movie wins by a mile. It is an interesting take on the story and the character of Chucky is well done to the point where you feel affection for him. You want to make him better rather than cheer when he finally gets his sticky end (and he always does) but my recommendation of this movie is to expect the IMDb score and hopefully you will give it the same score as me.
