Well way way WAY back in 2000 the X-Men had a movie all to themselves before the super hero movies exploded across everything. With a cast of Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Bruce Davison, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Ray Park, and Anna Paquin. It still had some famous names and a list of Superhero’s a long as your arm. Patrick Stewart was still cool after playing Captain Picard in the next generation of Star Trek as well as making himself known as a classic actor with parts on stage in Shakespearian plays and long before he sold his soul to return to character just to kill any affection anyone ever had for it. So, this movie was an early entry into the superhero world and kicked off the global domination of them. It is another movie that brings two scores together with me and IMDb giving this 7.4/10 with the tomatoes being more generous with 81%. Onto the plot...
This movie follows the early stages of Prof X setting up the X-Men academy to give mutants a safer place to develop their abilities in a safe and secluded areas. Just as the US sennet wants to pass a law where mutants are forced to sign a register and reveal their ability. With Prof X taking a pragmatic approach to working with the government he is concerned that Magneto may not take this new proposal quite as calmly as he will. With the screws of Magneto’s helmet not being as tight as they should be. He has a plan to point out to the senator what life is actually like as a mutant and the daily stresses of getting through life is actually like. Magento kidnaps him and a full of superhero war ensues with Wolverine and many other classic heroes doing battle with equally memorable villains. This is a great superhero movie back before everything and everyone had to appear in a movie for it to be a success. This was the forerunner for all those movies and that is because the success of this movie.
Made on a budget of $75m it went onto gross $296.3m which is a success and why it laid the tracks for major movie blockbusters to be born with huge budgets and huge expectations of the profits on the other side of things. For me this movie brought many of the heroes I had already fallen in love with to life and equally some of the villains as well. There is a hint of a political view here but the overall message is one of acceptance and it not a case of force-feeding an agenda down your throat, This is more of a forcing the issue in a major and I mean major way but leaving you to decide if you swallow the whole lot or throw up in the bog. I for one loved this movie with the opportunity to see Wolverine in live action sold it too me and I have to say Magneto is one of those classic villains that are simply fantastica and I can and have watched this movie over and again and it is still good to watch and good to see the information it sells in a subtle message to feed your thoughts and not drown you in dribble. If you haven’t seen it and like comic book heroes then you HAVE to go see this movie and you will not be disappointed.
