#251 – Sing – (74%)

In my eyes this is not old enough to be a 2016 movie but it is and it is an animated movie written and directed by Garth Jennings and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy. It was produced on a budget of $75m and went on to make $634.2m at the box office. If you need to tell me that was a success then you have not read any of my other reviews have you. As mentioned, it is an animated movie so has used the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton, and Tori Kelly. The movie has over sixty songs from various famous artists and will get you singing along to as well at some point. I am really feeding into the plot here.

But I don’t think I will give you the full plot here but to give you an overview as this feels the best option for this plot. This is basically a story set in a world of animals that are taking on human characteristics and being people. There is a koala called Buster Moon that is setting up a type of talent show where everyone sings. Being just like every other tv show you see on a Saturday evening each creature goes on an sings. Hence the title. Now the creatures that come along bring with them their own baggage. There is a gorilla whose family is pulling off a bank robbery and he is struggling to find the time to be the get away driver. A female pig who is mum and wife to a large family and doesn’t have the time to be a singer as she is being mum. There’s an elephant with a confidence problem and although a great singer she is too scared to go out and sing. The list goes on including the pig wife’s partner on stage. Well the Koala is putting up a fake amount of money and needs the show for his cash flow and is trying to work out how to pull everything together. This movie pulls all those characters together to bring the story together with hundreds (exaggeration!!) of songs along for the journey as well.

This is possibly the closest yet to identical three (I really need to give this a better name) (oh the critic triangle?) scores as IMDb gave this movie a 7.1/10 and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 72% so 3 points all three of us. This has to be the closest yet. There is good reason why the scores are so close together and that’s because it is a good movie. It works for a family and it leans on many different types of music which will get the grown ups going. Whilst the animation keeps the kids entertained with the slapstick comedy and madness. I know very young toddlers that love this movie and children of any age loving it too. It doesn’t feel like a boy movie but there is enough there to keep a boy entertained for most of it. I have to say it’s a nice movie that will make many people fall in love with it.
