Every so often things are sent to try us and for me it will be this review and the next one. As I had typed this review and the next one long into the night and I get up today and low and behold everything is gone so I get the joy of writing two review all over again. This will not be as good as the original one but here goes through gritted teeth and will be difficult for this to be a blah blah blah run through.
This movie was released in 2015 seven years after the original movie, this one is again an animated movie so you cannot really say stars but used the voice talents of people. Which it being an animation they can replace CeeLo Green with Keegan-Michael Key for the voice of the character of Murray. Many of the original cast do return in the form of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, Fran Drescher, Rob Riggle, Sadie Sandler, Jonny Solomon, Luenell, Chris Parnell and Jon Lovitz. The sequel also saw some new voices joining the cast in the form of Asher Blinkoff, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Dana Carvey and the unique tones of Mel Brooks.
The plot is set around 5 or more years after the first. (I remember putting a joke in there and I cannot remember it this time, grrr). It could be 7 years in fact as it follows the original movie as Mavis and Johnny are married and have a five-year-old son called Dennis. As Drac is the father of the bride the baby or infant well there actually 5 years old as he was celebrating his 5th birthday in the movie. Drac is increasingly worried about the lack of development of vampire traits in the boy, as having humans around the hotel may not be a safe thing for the humans, monsters or profits. Mavis and Johnny plan a trip to his parents and leave the child behind (as you do with five-year olds and in-laws!!!). This convenient plot (yes, I know Drac planned it) twist leaves Drac in charge off the child so he recruits Frank, Wayne, Griffin, Murray and Blobby the opportunity to train Dennis to be a monster. Dennis rises to this challenge by showing no evidence of being a monster in any way shape or form. This drives Drac crazy to the point where he takes the whole group to the top of a cliff to throw the child off with the aim of him sprouting wings before hitting the ground. Now I am going to stop the plot here just as I’ve set the overview and probably taken you through too much already. All I know is last nights version was better.
I am sorry I feel like I’ve let you down with this one! The movie was produced on $80m and had nearly doubled that total in the US alone. Globally the box-office score was $474.8 which has to be seen as a success. The critics didn’t quite see it the same as IMDb scored it a rather average 6.7/10 and the Rotten Tomatoes gave it even less at 56%. I believe it’s another case of a movie being judges by its original in the critic’s world but liked by Joe Public apparently. It can easily be seen as people liked the original movie and you have to pay in advance to get into the cinema so you don’t know what you are getting and when was the last time you asked for your money back at the cinema. I was tempted with the Last Jedi. However, steering this back to my point (if I have one) and that is that this is still a good movie. It is still funny, is it still entertaining, it is still good for kids, it is still well produced, it still has some famous names to carry it off, but its not as funny or as entertaining or as much fun for kids as the first one. Doesn’t make it a bad movie which is why I scored it the way I felt.
