To put this one behind the original movie was a tricky decision for me as it was so clever that I was tempted to give this the extra percentage point to move it above. This was ‘Back to the Future 2’ and for me a sci-fi classic. From memory back when this was released in the cinema after the success of the original movie, they made the final two parts at the same time. Let me just check into those details, first shall I? Released in 1989 this and the final part of the franchise was made Back-to-Back so as editing and dubbing was going on with this the filming on the third movie was still happening meaning for three-week period the Director was flying twice a day to shoot during the day and supervise the editing/dubbing in the evenings. This was produced by Bob Gale and Neil Canton with the screenplay credit going to Bob Gale alone as he shared the story credit with the Director Robert Zemeckis. It starred the duo of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd along with Lea Thompson and Thomas F. Wilson. Music by the legend known as Alan Silvestri. With a shared budget of $40m for both this and the third this one went on to return $336m from the box office. Which says more about the love of the first movie than this one. That said this one did not disappoint with a similar theme as the original. Loved by so many 80’s children it was not so loved by the critics with IMDb giving this a 7.8 out of 10 and a mere 66% from the Rotten Tomatoes. Which I must disagree with but there we go. The plot is next.
After the successful conclusion of the first movie the Doc arrives back in 1985 and tells Marty that he and his girlfriend need to travel to the future to help their kids. This occasion Biff see’s their departure and arriving in 2015 Doc leaves Jennifer asleep and explains that maybe she shouldn’t have knowledge of the future. The plan is for Marty to ‘stand-in’ for Marty Junior and stand up to Griff (Biff’s grandson) who is planning a robbery and say no so he doesn’t get arrested. Whilst in the future Marty decides to by a Sports Almanac with all the sports results to make himself rich in the future. Doc tries to stop the plan and destroy the book but is interrupted which leads to the opportunity for Biff to steal the time machine travel back to 1955 and give his younger self the almanac so he could become rich famous and subsequently re-write the timelines to see his future better than ever whilst making the McFly’s horrid. How are the boys going to unravel this time travel knot?
I loved this movie, less so the future aspect of the movie which was clever with the futuristic items such as the fitting clothes and the hover board. I liked that but what I loved was the way this one entwined with the original movie. As there is now two Marty’s and two Doc’s running around town trying to avoid the other versions. The way the director managed this with the other ducking out of sight via car doors and replying to lines from the original movie. Being in the background of other shots and in the foreground with the old film behind is absolutely amazing and at the time I was amazed and in love with just how clever this movie was. It slotted into my collection with the video’s and followed suit with the DVD and will be back again in the future no doubt once I decide which way to go. I will not be relying on some cloud-based system as they are a bit too happy to use modern technology and just cut scenes out or change them to make them more politically correct. Not that this movie should be at any risk of being tweaked by you never know the direct may come back to change bits just like Star Wars. Anyway, this is a well loved and appreciated movie for its clever ness and bending of the theories of time travel to suit there ends and this is so good at it that it will be loved by me for ever.
Next up if this was not 80’s movie enough for you we have the pinnacle of 80’s movies summed up in one 114 minutes of crooks, kids, fun, adventure, and pirates.
