Tim Burton is back on this list again and I am going to say its possibly one of the lower scores for one of his movies. This is the 2005 remake of the 1971 movie or just another interpretation of Roald Dahl’s children’s story. Now I am resisting the urge to start typing about what a legendary author Roald was which I have to say it is not easy to do as he is a fantastic author. You should go and read his books and he is a pretty good screenwriter as well. Tales of the Unexpected case in point. See I am forcing myself to stop now and move on. Tim Burton’s movie stars some of his usual friends namely Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, Christopher Lee & of course Helena Bonham Carter with Danny Elfman doing the musical score. Other stars are David Kelly, Noah Taylor, Missi Pyle, James Fox & Deep Roy as the Oompa Loopa's. It cost $150m to produce and then returned $475m which has to be seen as a success. The critics were divided on this subject with IMDb giving it a 6.6/10 whilst the Rotten Tomatoes were more pleased with an 83% with me stuck in the middle with you.
The plot should be read rather than watched but I will give it a go here none the less.
Willy Wonka owns the weirdest, wonderful, creative, amazing, original and fantastical sweet factory EVER! He has put a gold ticket in five of his world-famous Wonka bars and the owner of said ticket will get a full tour of the factory explained above. So, the ticket goes out in random bars across the world and everyone is excited to have the opportunity going to the factory for the tour and more so to peek behind the vail of Wonka’s secrets. Well all manor of spoilt and over privileged kids have forced there way into winning a ticket, from buying thousands of bars to making others find a ticket for them. Charlie on the other hand is poor and has to scramble enough cash together to afford a bar. Well it wouldn’t be a story without him miraculously winning the final ticket in the world and off he goes to the factory. Now this wouldn’t be a Roald Dahl story without a twist or two in the tale and some adventures along the way.
This is a fantastic story and a story I remember lovingly from my childhood. This is a fair interpterion of the story and is looks at the movie from a different angle from the previous musical version. It doesn’t make it bad and more so it doesn’t make it diverse away from the actual book story. It is in fact probably closer to the original story than the Gene Wilder version which so many other people prefer. This is a good movie and you have to ignore the musical version and watch this based on the book to fully appreciate this is not a remake of the other film but it is a film of the book. Do not be swayed by the remake tag be the master of your own judgement and you may appreciate it just that little bit more than you did.
