A 2004 play on the character of Van Helsing who if my memory correctly first appeared in the novel Dracula. Now from memory Van Helsing was an elderly Doctor who is the sounding board for Dr Steward who is unsure how to treat Lucy so calls in advise from a seasoned pro – Van Helsing. This movie does not follow that line at all! It takes liberties with all the classic horror movies and rolls them into one movie. It stars Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, Richard Roxburgh, David Wenham, Will Kemp, Kevin J. O'Connor & Shuler Hensley. It received a score of 24% from Rotten Tomatoes and is seen by many horror movie buffs as a joke comedy for the horror genre.
To prove it does not take liberties with other stories Count Dracula is assisting Dr Victor Frankenstein along with Igor to create a monster. As soon as the creature is complete Dracula kills the Doctor to be able to use the creature for his own purposed. A year prior to that a young and daring Van Helsing is fighting Mr Hyde in Notre Dame Cathedral and I mean full on action fight. After his victory Van Helsing goes to the Vatican and is tasked by Cardinal Jinette to got to Transylvania and kill Dracula and protect the Valerious a group of descendants who vowed to kill Dracula or fall into purgatory. So off he goes with Carl a friar and inventor to assist him. They meet Anna and Velkan who are fighting one of Dracula’s controlled werewolves. They end up at a village which is attacked by Dracula’s three wives all vampires and killing one allows enough trust for Anna to join him on his quest. Is this enough? Basically, Dracula controls everything and everyone from any historic horror movie anywhere and a young fist punching no holds barred Van Helsing is here to kick arse!! Sorry ass American readers.
This flies in the face of classic horror movies and re-writes many of the old stories, classic movies and beloved characters. The question you are looking for is why give this a 74% rating when all you have done is moan about it well to quote Pulp Fiction ‘please allow me to retort’ The Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 54% and the IMDb score is 6.2/10. People do like it and I would guess they are the younger members out there. Those that haven’t read the classics and do not know the history and just watched the film for what it is. What is it? – I hear you ask. Well it’s a fun romp through a genre that sometimes people take too seriously. This is entertaining and I for one watch a movie to be entertained. Which means it is doing what it planned to do so what is there not to like? Why not just switch off your brain and enjoy a horror-esk fun romp which is action packed and enjoyable.
