#262 - Red 2 - (74%)

So, moving onto an action packed spy sequel Red 2 there are a host of names in this all playing retiring spies, assassins and double agents and weird but talented agents. This is a follow up to the 2010 movie “Red”. Which this movie follows in the footsteps of. This was made on a budget of $84m it did eventually go on to make $148.1m at the box-office. This version stars Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lee Byung-hun, Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren.

The story picks up where the ex-CIA agent Frank Moses (Willis) is looking to just lead a normal life. He had got a new girlfriend from the earlier film its time to chill and move on. His friend Marvin warns him that his enemies are out to get him which he ignores but when Marvin’s car explodes as he leaves that might just get him thinking again. He still isn’t convinced and he also isn’t convinced that Marvin is dead despite attending his funeral. A corrupt agent called Jack Horton wants some information out of Frank, he and the gang escape and go on the run. Frank learns that he has been targeted as members of Operation Nightshade during the cold war the operation was to smuggle a nuclear weapon into Russia. Horton convinces everyone that they are terrorists and on the run and then sets up that every hitman, assassin and agent are now on their trail to kill them. I think that sets this up enough for you, there are plenty of action second guessing and people knowing things they shouldn’t and getting away with last second changes (Flash Gordon-esk).

This is an enjoyable romp but again this is not one of my movies but I have watched it of an evening and tried to work out how I had missed these scenes as I thought I was watching the original one again. The scores elsewhere are IMDb with an ok 6.6/10 but the Rotten Tomatoes crew have struck it down with a 44%, but I am starting to lose confidence in this now. I will do some digging and report back that this is the critics score and not the audience score which to me is more relevant and they gave it a slightly more creditable 63%. So the bottom line I am trying to get across here is that this isn’t a bad film but its not as good as the original (Have I said that before in these reviews?)
