#279 - Muppets From Space - (73%)

Again another movie that could have been close to the first ever agreed scores at IMDb has 6.3/10 and Rotten Tomato’s have 63% then I go and screw it all up but giving it 10 points more! This is one of the weaker stories in the Muppets Canon and flopped at the box office taking a $1.5m loss from its $24m budget. It has all the usual Muppet characters in it but also Jeffrey Tambor, Pat Hingle, Rob Schneider, and Andie MacDowell. That enough of an intro shall we move onto the plot.

There’s a plot I hear you cry and the answer is yes there is. Kind of. The film is centred on Gonzo this time and the fact that no one really knows what he is. A blue thing with a large nose, who is in every muppets adventure ever. But clearly not a bird or a human he is human in shape with two legs two arms but has been stretched and shrunk. He has a massive blue nose and nasal tones to his speech and has always been labelled a ‘whatever’. He has become upset by this and has been putting some thought into working out the answer. He believes that he had been sent signs that are trying to send him a message. He is convincing himself that he must be an alien and that his family is trying to communicate with him. None of the other muppets do not believe him. The US government have now started to take an interest. One department the COVNET secret department trying to track down aliens becomes very interested. Can you see where this is going, as I may leave it there and let you work out the rest for yourself with Gonzo being captured and the muppets orchestrating a rescue plan and all the usual capers that the muppets get up to.

OK why is this movie ranked where it is according to me. Well I am going to start with what’s wrong with the film and I am desperately trying not to draw connections with Dr Who here but the point I am trying to make we as an audience of the Muppets liked the Muppets because they are funny, caring and ultimately in a weird way people love them. When people fall in love, they are interested but not bothered by the history of their love. So, knowing Gonzo’s history and where he came from really doesn’t matter. You enjoy the Muppets because of who they are not who they were. So, my point is you could make any story here and been able to feed the gags and adventure that makes this movie watchable (I probably meant enjoyable there, didn’t I?). The overriding theme of this movie should be the story line and for me it was not the reason I watched this film. I enjoyed this movie and clearly watched this more closely than the previous film and it has everything you would expect from a Muppets movie and for me it doesn’t drop any balls per se.If you can excuse the story you like myself will enjoy the movie.
