OK we never brought this DVD so why the hell is it this high on my list to be honest I don’t know but let’s begin and see if it gives me any answers. Staring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Maggie Elizabeth Jones, Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit, Elle Fanning, Colin Ford, and John Michael Higgins. Released in 2011 it spent $50m on the budget to make $120.1m at the box-office.
The plot here is all in the title as it follows Matt Damon who plays Benjamin Mee who is grieving the death of his wife. His son has been expelled from school and his daughter is also coming to terms with her mother’s death. They decide the best way to move forward is to start fresh and buy a new house so they go tour many houses to find a new one. They find a house that is attached to a zoo meaning if they buy one, they get the other. They decide to buy the zoo and take it over. They start to improve the zoo and the keepers start to get involved too. But money is tight just as an inspector arrives to see if the zoo can actually open. He decides that it cannot without another huge investment which he hasn’t got. He then finds out that his wife left him an investment and his friend tell him to sell and use the money to start fresh with the kids but he decides to use the lot to try and restore the zoo back to level that could see it open again. That enough to get you to watch it? Or do you need my bit to convince you.
This is one of the closest scores between the external scores and me as it has a score at IMDb of 7.1/10 and tomatoes at 65%. Now the reason for this I would assume is that its not a bad movie. It has heart and character and draws you in to the family’s plight and the zookeepers love of the animals and when you hear that the whole town loved the zoo as well you really start to get you on board. Its not an explosive adventure of do or dare excitement from beginning to end but a slow steady story that could entertain family and you as well. It not an arty farty, do or die, rip snorter of a movie it’s a slow-paced uneventful story that you will love. Especially when you find out its based on a true story, now go treat yourself.
