#293 - BFG - Live Action (Spielberg) – (73%)

Writer's picture: MyersMyers

This is the 2016 Steven Spielberg version of this story and for those that do not know BFG stands for Big Friendly Giant. Which is a bit strange as he is a giant but is not that big compared to the other giant. Sorry I digress again. When this was made it took $140m to make and I am assuming the marketing and promotion took this way beyond the profit line with takings of $195.2m at the box-office. We are closer than usual with me at 73% and IMDb at 6.4/10 and the tomatoes at 75% so it is a liked and enjoyable movie. Which says a lot for the story line and another one of these movies where I tell you to go read the book first as it is fantastic (most Roald Dahl children’s novels are!).

Straight to the plot, shall we? Yes good! The story follows a 10-year-old girl called Sophie who sees a giant and then gets captured by him and taken to Giant land. He explains that now she has to live with him forever as he cannot risk her going a telling anyone. He also explains that Giant like to eat humans and that she should never go out into the open Giant land. He is a provider of dreams and that what he does at night is to go to human land and give them nice dreams which makes him happy. Discovering that this is his role Sophie thinks it will be a good idea to send the queen a nightmare explaining that these giants do exist and will eat the children of Britain if she doesn’t take action. So now all they have to do is to get into Buckingham Palace at night and deliver the dream followed by a conversation regarding how to deal with the problem. I will let Roald take it from there as he is far superior at story writing that I will ever be and a much-loved person for children everywhere.

This is a good film and good adaptation of a really good story but it had been done already and had the voice of David Jason so could you actually improve on that? No not according to my list and my opinion. I liked this version of the story but I loved the other version. Which is very crusty and old but like an old cloth eared teddy bear that you can’t stand to part with I like the old one thanks you!
