#301 - Event Horizon - (72%)

The final movie in this section and my fingers are falling off, well not quite as I have loads and loads still to go which may drive me crazy but there, we go I’ve started so I will attempt to finish. We go from 1979 to 1997 and the sci-fi horror called event horizon starring Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill. It also has Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, Richard T Jones, Jack Noseworthy, Sean Pertwee, Peter Marinker, Holley Chant, Barclay Wright, Noah Huntley and Robert Jezerk. It was a massive failure at the box office covering less than half of its $60m budget in cinemas with gross US figures of $26.7m. It did however find a following in the world of video’s and DVD’s and it sold very well. I think the issue was not this film but that it was screwed about with in production and desperation to get it to cinema’s as quickly as possible.

Onto the plot. It is set in the distant future 2047 which isn’t quite so far away anymore but the Event Horizon is in fact a spaceship which is stuck in orbit of Venus (or is Neptune.) Hang on… ok its Neptune 100% (Sorry!!) but it is sending a distress signal so another ship is on its way to the rescue and the Horizon’s designer is on the rescue ship. He explains that the ship has a special drive onboard which creates a small black hole to suck everything through to reappear at another point in the universe. This cuts space travel time down to a blink of an eye compared to steadily making your way anywhere. Well the distress signal is unclear and they board the ship and find what appears to be the results of a massacre. The Horizon causes a shock wave which damages the rescue ship meaning the entire have to board the Event Horizon and try to fly it home. Another wave drags Justin Noseworthy through to another black hole pocket he later returns and is so messed up he tries to commit suicide forcing the rest of the crew to force him into stasis. The question is that rather than a black hole and a pocket to blink out of time here and reappear where you want to in another part of space. Is it just a black hole or a portal to hell and back? The results make that very difficult to tell the difference between the difference.

This is a horror movie that has scared the crap out of many of my friends and I can see why. There are plenty of jumps and scary faces appearing out of nowhere along with psychological element of are they dealing with just a portal dragging something scary through or is it a gateway to hell and who knows what will be coming through. The problem for me was that *trying to making a spoiler as little as possible* when the possession happens it becomes about a person rather than this undefinable force that could be anything. This is why this isn’t in the eighties and in the second section of the list.
