Way back in 1979 the Muppets began their movie careers with this one. With a budget of around $8m it went on to make $76m at box office and secure many more films to come and make the muppets a house hold name on both sides of the Atlantic. The historic tradition names were all associated with the move with starring and the voices of Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Dave Goelz, Charles Durning, Austin Pendleton, Edgar Bergen, Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Elliott Gould, Bob Hope, Madeline Kahn, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Orson Welles & Paul Williams. AND BREATHE!!
This original movie basically tells the story of how the gang originally got together and why Kermit is the keystone of the gang. The story (not the movie) begins with Kermit singing in his swamp with his banjo. He is spotted by Bernie who is surprising a talent spotter who tells Kermit he should be a huge Hollywood Start and should leave his Florida swamp and head to California to seek fame and fortune at the golden ticket of Hollywood stardom. So off he goes travelling from the East all the way across the states to the West. In pursuit is Doc Hopper who owns a failing frogs legs restaurant and wants Kermit to be the spokesman for his business. With each refusal from Kermit his request become more and more forceful. So Kermit travels and on his way he meets each of the muppets gang and collects them along route and they all journey to Hollywood to seek stardom.
That a good overview of the movie me thinks and its somewhat dated but you can see some really inventive tricks with them riding bikes and playing banjo’s etc it’s a really great to treat yourself. Ignore the olden crusty edges and enjoy it for what it is and that just good old school fun.
