Released in 2007 using a budget of $150m it made $293m at the box office this animated feature starred the voices Jerry Seinfeld and Renée Zellweger, with Matthew Broderick, Patrick Warburton, John Goodman and Chris Rock in supporting roles. The critics are a bit meh about this movie with nearly all having a score right down the middle of the range. One critic was relieved to see the humour of Seinfeld making it to screen after the ‘fart jokes’ of Shrek but who am I to judge.
The film follows a Bee called Barry who is about the become of age and join the ranks of being employed within the hive but then releasing that whichever job he takes will be for life and there is no opportunity to change he begins to doubt the hive mentality. He is invited out on the equivalent of a drive along and goes out with some farmer bees to gather some pollen and gets completely lost in rain storm. He ends up landing with a nice lady Vanessa (Zellweger) balcony. Her boyfriend spots him and tries to squish him but she saves him and releases out the window. Barry decides to return and thank her for saving his life this breaks the sacred rule that bees are not supposed to speak to people. After the initial shock the two develop a good friendship until one day they go shopping together and Barry is deeply disturbed by seeing jars and jars of honey on a shelf. Barry then discovers that humans have been stealing honey for years and not only that the Bees are badly treated in the process as well. Barry starts legal action against the cruelty of the stealing of honey and he wins the case so now the bees have plenty of honey and don’t have to work resulting in the bees all going out of work and the need to pollenate the world gone. Flowers start to die off and I’ve just realised that I’ve gone too far with the plot already so I should stop otherwise I will ruin the rest of this movie for you as well and then there won’t be any reason to actually go out and watch it will there.
This is a Jerry Seinfeld story if ever I’ve seen one. Its funny political and makes kids happy so what could you complain about well if I am honest not much. It may not make you laugh out loud (it didn’t me but I am hard to please) but it will entertain you and the kids for an afternoon so go give it chance.
