This 2004 sequel arrived two years after the first live action version of Scooby Doo movie and this one made some assumptions of what people enjoyed from the first movie and laboured that point to the extreme. The film starred Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, Tim Blake Nelson, Peter Boyle, Alicia Silverstone and Neil Fanning reprising his role as the voice of Scooby-Doo. Budget was around $25m and then took over $180m at the box office. After the success of the first movie this was always going to make money at the box office with everyone remembering the first one. The critics were not so keen on it and this one holds a low score on both of my usual reviewing sites.
The plot follows the gang as they go to a celebration of all their success and see a list of monsters that they helped capture of mysteries they managed to solve. Well just one of those has decided to show up the Pterodactyl Ghost and shows them to be fools at it rains on their parade. Heather (Silverstone) a journalist who was there for the event writes a scathing review of the gang and then follows up with a smear campaign against the gang as well. As they try to work out how the monsters are coming back and attacking them, they start to squabble within the group and the groups splits again with Shaggy and Scooby overhearing the others blaming them for everything they decide to go their own way and solve the mystery themselves. How can the group get back together and solve the mystery? With them apart who is going to stop the return of some many historical creatures they thought they had already got rid of once and why is Heather being such a bitch.
Well I’ve hyped up the story in this one so I am about to give it a shitty review well I’m not if you want to read or see someone slag this movie off then the rotty red one would be a good start but to be fair you could go anywhere as there are not many nice review out there for this flick but I enjoyed it. It doesn’t lay a finger on the quality of the first one as it basically came up with the theory that people liked the monsters from the first film so we need so many classic monsters running around and that was it really monsters and monsters and it lacked to heart, energy and comedy of the first one, in my eyes it doesn’t make it a bad movie it just fits into the good but not great category like so many in this section of the list.
