#314 - Ice Age 2 – The Meltdown - (72%)

Writer's picture: MyersMyers

The second one. I was tempted to stop there but I will give you the blurb as well. Released in 2006 some four years after the original. It was a box office success as it had a budget $80m it amassed $660.9m at the box office worldwide. Starring the returning voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Chris Wedge with new members of the cast - Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott and Josh Peck. It followed 4 years after the original and has the main characters returning with some new one to join the gang for future movies as well.

The basic plot revolves around the gang realising that where they live is effectively a dam of Ice and they have one route out. So, they decide to take this route (obviously) but encounter some possum’s and Manny is worried about being the last mammoth left on the planet. It’s almost setting the story up for what’s to follow!!. Two reptile type creatures defrost from the ice wall and are now hunting the gang. The possums are friends with another giant possum that looks exactly like a mammoth. A female mammoth, Manny. A female Mammoth are you listening Manny a GIRL!!! You can see where this is going if she can just work out that she is a mammoth that is. Oh, and they don’t all get eaten by the giant reptile things or enclosed and trapped by the ice. I think that’s enough of the plot to keep you interested.

I enjoyed this movie but nowhere near the original story. I don’t know if it was the human element of the first movie or the story itself but I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. I am not that makes sense but it does to me. Scored a 6.8/10 on IMDb and the Tomato scored it 57% where I must have enjoyed it more than them but there you go. I like the sloth and Ray’s voice makes me smile and reminds me why everyone loves him. You can hear his voice being a mammoth can’t you. Sid just makes me laugh no matter what he is up to in each of the films but there is something not quite there in this movie for me.
