This is an Adam Sandler movie from 2015, well he produced and stars in it. It grossed it budget in the states which was about $129m but went on to gross $244.9m worldwide. It was quite well received by the public in terms of takings the critics were mixed at best and it currently sits at 5.5/10 from IMDb and a mere 16% from the Tomato people but there we go. Shall we move onto the flimsy plot? OK
Many years ago, as part of the space programme to interest alien life should they stumble upon it, NASA sent video games along with other items out in effectively was a time capsule. Well aliens misunderstood these games and saw this as a challenge. They arrive at earth and send various different giant versions of 80s video games to challenge the best of earth with a winner lives and we leave or lose and will kill you all and take over. The earth calls the best video game players of the 80’s and rounds them up to do battle with aliens at such games as Pac-Man, Centipede and Donkey Kong. So, this band of men have a history of competing with each other over a joystick but they have all grown up a bit and some grown closer together whilst other much, MUCH further apart. Will they succeed and save the earth, will they be able to work together to do so? Who knows unless you watch it?
It starred Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad & Brian Cox. It is quite a typical Sandler film with prat falls, laughs and attachments to historical events that echo on the current story and the opportunity for him to be the hero but with a sentimental loveable angle. Yep that sums up most of his films but the bottom line (or should that be the top) is I gave it a 72% and that’s because I enjoyed it. I may not have laughed out loud but it definitely lightened the mood brought back memories of playing these blasted games and throwing coins at it to try and beat the days highest score let alone the worlds which some of these guys were trying to do. Switch off your logical brain, ok switch off your brain completely and sit back and enjoy this brainless fun.
