#326 - Rio 2 - (72%)

Writer's picture: MyersMyers

The second of the Rio movies followed its predecessor in 2014 and budget was $103m and went onto gross $498m at the box office. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez, Jemaine Clement, Kristin Chenoweth, Andy García, Bruno Mars, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Rachel Crow, Amandla Stenberg, Pierce Gagnon, Rita Moreno, Miguel Ferrer, Tracy Morgan, will.i.am and Jamie Foxx to name where that $100m went to.

This follows the first movie Blu and Jewel and their three Children Bia, Carla and Tiago are living it up in Rio but Jewel is worried that her kids are growing up too priviledged and pandered. So she decided to take them all to the amazon and try and find another Spix Macaw. Meanwhile the head of an illegal logging group named highly originally Big Boss discovers Linda’s and Tulio’s expedition to find the macaws and orders his henchmen to hunt them down to avoid any disruption to the business. OK do you need more of a plot set up? If you can’t work out that Blu finds a family of Spix Macaws and cannot fit in and gets paranoid whilst the loggers capture the others meaning a huge rescue mission is required. OK I’ve spoilt too much and I’ll shut up now.

This follows on from the first movie with a bright colourful cartoon with a slight sentimental element. Comparing the reviews market place the tomatoes mob has it at 48% Metracritic at 49% and IMDb 6.3/10 so all around a similar mark. I know this is a film that the kids will love to watch and gives a good hour and a half of escapism which is what movies are all about.
