#338 - Son of The Mask - (71%)

In 2005 the powers that be released the Son Of The Mask a superhero comedy film following the success of the Jim Carrey vehicle that was the Mask. This movie is set 10 years after the events of the first movie and Jim is no where to be seen! So how is there a follow up movie, I hear you ask and the answer is. in the freaking title jeeze!! You really need to be spoon fed don’t you!! Use some imagination!

The plot is that Tim Avery’s Jack Russell finds the mask eventually he puts it on and whilst wearing it has hanky panky with his wife and abracadabra – the Son Of the Mask! So, you have a baby with the fun attitude of the mask with a playful nature. Meanwhile Loki has escaped from Odin’s prison and arrives (as you do) to find the actual mask before Odin gets angry and captures him again or worse.

Well that’s the plot and here’s my very confusing review and this is going to contradiction upon contradiction. I like this film and the reason I like this film has very little to do with the film. Please see the first word of the line above. So why do I like this movie and put it at a 71% rating is because I love my children is the easiest way to describe it. It holds memories of both of my kids sitting together watching this movie, it was one of the first movies that they took and watched on their own and I watched as they grew up. But this movie brings backs memories of holidays in caravans or sitting under blankets in front of a fire in the darkest winter evening with the wind howling outside and some special hugs to remember. OK the film is awful in all kinds of way but as I loved the first Mask film, I wanted to like this one and it saw a compromise as both of my kids were terrified of the Mask movie when we first watched it. So rather than them not sleeping at night we watched the son of mask as they could laugh without being scared. Would I recommend you watching this movie?

HELL NO!! DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!

This is not a good movie in any way I could try to make it sound good and to back up my argument IMDb gave it 2.2 out of ten and rotten tomatoes gave it 6% (yes that’s out of 100%). On a budget of upwards of $100m it grossed less than $60m at the box office I don’t know many businesses surviving on a -$40m turnover. Do not waste your valuable time on something that I enjoy for all the wrong reasons for a film review.
