#342 - World's End - (70%)

The conclusion to the cornetto trilogy ends with the end of the world as we know it. Simon, Nick and Edgar return for their third unrelated movie with the exception of a cornetto being mentioned in each one. Of the three this is the lowest scored and probably the lowest in interest from me as well. It didn’t live up to the comedy of Hot Fuzz or the almost perfect comedy horror of Shawn of the Dead so maybe it’s a case of this not being bad but not being able to live up to its predecessors. Released in 2013 and made $46m+ at the box office.

The plot is about five friends of forty somethings returning to the town they used to live in to complete a pub crawl labelled the golden mile it is a challenge they failed to complete the last time they were there together. To be completely informative for you here is the pub crawl pubs in the movie and the actual location of where they were filmed:

I am damn good to you aren’t I? Well failing to get through a pint in each back as kids, they as men beer belly in tow (well in front), return through peer pressure from the then leader Gary King along with his lies & pressure general payments and willingness to say whatever it takes to bring the gang back for his own evening of reminiscing. The film could be enough just watching the five of them interact with each other and bump into some of the folk who may remember them. They even end up repeating some of the actions from all those years ago. Then the movie changes direction and this isn’t a slight curve in the plot but more of a hairpin bend of a direction change as Gary gets into a fight with a youngster in the toilet and smashes his head clean off and rather than blood, he oozes blue liquid stuff everywhere. The rest of the gang conclude that the whole garden city has been taken over by Aliens and they already know they are here for a pub crawl if they stop it will give away that they are onto them so they decide to continue. All the way to the World’s End.

I know people that love this movie and I am fond of it being filmed in locations I used to know quite well as I had friends in Letchworth and I worked in Wycombe as well so it was weird to see places I knew in different ways and the film was funny in parts. The problem is it wasn’t the laugh out loud spectacle that Shawn was and this is alright I couldn’t give it more than alright.

PS that may annoy some people and someone in this house but sorry it’s my view.
