#343 - Cloverfield - (70%)

This was the first in what was planned to be a trilogy of movies and I never got much past this first film. Directed by Matt Reeves it was produced by Jar Jar Abrams which I assume would be one of his first movies and another found footage type movie. It is very well done with the special effects showing how the story is unfolding in the background to the characters you are following. You see their interactions with the bigger story happening in New York. The movie was a box office success back in 2008 and back when I had very young children and worked in Wembley so I didn’t go to the cinema to see it. I merely brought this movie in a bargain bonus basket buy for a quid or two and then left it another year or two to get around to watching, which may have worked in its favour for my own taste. I was not given good reviews of this movie prior to viewing it myself which may be why I wasn’t expecting very much. Hearing it was yet another camcorder carrying movie didn’t fill me full of hope.

The story however works quite well. It follows five individuals in New York City all of which seem to be obsessed about videoing what is going on. Firstly, it’s a party so I can understand that to a certain point but heartfelt conversations and arguments seem a bit strange to be keeping for prosperity. Anyways NYC is hit but what everyone on video thinks is an earthquake and leads up to a very good scene as they head out of the building the head of the statue of liberty rolls past. It highlights the fact that the earthquake appears not to be an earthquake but a Godzilla sized monster attacking of the city. You hear that the national guard is on route to do battle when a building containing one of the friend smashes and topples against another leaving it is balancing precariously and leaving the friend trapped. The remaining members of the gang organise a plan to rescue her but the big creature starts shedding little creatures that they have to fight their way through to attempt the rescue. There is lots more story to tell but I think I’ve enjoyed this movie to not reveal the whole story to you but to get you in far enough to let you want to go watch it yourself. It also concludes with the videos crackling and going back to the couple on a Ferris wheel by the coast a few weeks before the brown sticky stuff hit the fan, could there be extra clues in there? This movie spawned another movie and then a TV show and I am not going to lie but I have not bothered with either of those and not for political reasons but just because they didn’t spark an interest from me when the opportunity to view presented itself.

This is a good movie to watch its clever enough to leave you thinking about its conclusion as the footage was found and you do not get the full story on screen so you draw your own conclusions which is good enough for my little brain to stand up and salute it so well done you tweak the interest I hadn’t shown before.
