Rob Zombie makes an appearing in my list in this 2003 horror. A horror that saw Rob’s debut as a Director and to sound like a broken record it’s a good movie. We are clutching onto the 70%’s but its in there on merit. It saw the beginning of one of the freakiest families on film. I could cover the plot in a sentence as it basically revolves around a group of teenagers captured by a family of nutters who proceed to torture them. You can see elements of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre here and even Rob admitted to being influenced by it. Not taking marketing into account and looking at budget to box office money it made around $10m which isn’t bad for a director debut.

A pair of crap robbers attempt an armed robbery at the wrong petrol station (sorry its in the states) so we will call it a gas station, I guess. They are killed by Captain Spaulding the owner of the station. Four more travellers come along who are trying to write a guide to roadside attractions and here of the local legend Dr Satan and Spaulding’s other business the Museum of Monsters and Madmen. They go off in search of the tree where Dr Satan was hung and ala Chainsaw pick up a hitchhiker (WHICH YOU SHOULD NEVER DO IN A HORROR MOVIE!!!). Surprise, surprise the car gets a flat tyre and they end up close enough to the hitchhiker’s home then she convinces them to go there. They annoy their host but I think it was an impossible task not to and hearing the car is fixed they plan to leave. They are jumped before they reach the car and then subjected to torturous events for pretty much the rest of the movie. One tries to escape and stumbles onto the legendary Dr Satan who likes experimenting on the mental in a conclusion that for me left it a bit flat. I think the movie deserved a better conclusion but I can see what Zombie was going for and it was OK but something just didn’t sit right for me. Not sure how personally but I think it wanted a better ending. It did spawn two more movies so maybe I should look at this not as the end of the movie but the closing of part 1 and should cut it some slack. It is a well-liked movie of Horror fans and got lots of people keen to see the next one which in my opinion was a better movie but then again it had more cash to play with.

There are little punches pulled in this gory flick so be ready for that, as my final point.
