#349 - Garfield The Movie (70%)

Writer's picture: MyersMyers

Before I begin this I wanted to add that this originally began as 450 films wittled down to just over 400 and put into 8 sections the last movie was the end of the first section and this movie was the beginning of the next (just to explain the start of below) -

Wow here we go! I cannot believe that I thought this would be a good idea but here we are at the next movie. One that I thought would disappoint me and it didn’t really let me down. Garfield was a comedy cartoon cat that used to be stuck to the passenger side rear windows of cars everywhere. It was so popular that the made a movie out of it. A movie that took over $200m at the box office in 2004 and starred Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Garfield was voiced by Bill Murray.

The general story of Garfield is a fat lazy cat that loves nothing better than Lasagna. His put-upon owner Jon Arbuckle looks after this lazy cat with an energetic and over enthusiastic dog called Odie. That is the story of so many cartoons, comics and now meme’s and captions everywhere. If ever there was an excuse for not going to the gym Garfield with have a reason. I think one of his lines that was stolen being I am not over weight but under tall.

Anyway, this particular story covers the blossoming love of Jon and his vet Dr Liz Wilson played by Jennifer. While the bumbling Jon and confident Liz start to kick things off a TV Show called Good Day New York has a TV celebrity called Happy Chapman played by the enigmatic Stephen Tobolowsky who appeared in Groundhog Day with Bill Murray (he was the annoying insurance salesman that went to school with Phil Conner’s. He can play that friendly but annoying character oh too well. And he gives another great over the top performance in this movie as well. Garfield is always irritated by Odie’s energy and enthusiasm for life but he’s really had enough and dreams of ways of getting shot of that bouncing buffoon. Happy is running a talent contest and Odie dances for it and is that good that Happy decides he is going to keep Odie and use him to become very rich and famous.

Garfield then has a crisis of guilt after leading Odie to his doom and organises his own rescue plan for the over energetic hound.

This was an enjoyable film and with Bill Murrays voice playing its part it will always be seen as good with the right level of dead beat cannot be asked to help or exercise attitude played to perfection. Unfortunately, those who loved the cartoons or the original animation of the cat may not like the animation or the voice I was not intrenched enough to notice and enjoyed the flow of the light story and jokes as they went along. Again, is this one of my favourites a scores of 70 but scraping into the top 350 may answer your question.
