Finally, I have reached the end of the first section of this list and it concludes with a remake!! Shock horror a remake that I don’t mind that much. It might have something to do with both versions not being that good so the remake is slightly better than the other one or is it due to me not owning the original so I have to get on with this one.
Released in 1991, starring Lance Henriksen and set in Spain in the late 1400’s. Lance plays the Grand Inquisitor and becomes obsessed with a girl who speaks out about the execution of a family. Lance tries to atone for being obsessed with Maria (she had to be called Maria didn’t she) by self-torture. When this doesn’t work, he presumes he must be bewitched and has her arrested and interrogated. Seeing her naked and questioned really helps reduce his libido, in fact not at all and he becomes even more fanatical about her. Meanwhile Maria’s husband has decided to plot an escape plan for her and breaks in to free her. He is captured and put into the new torture device and you’ll never guess what it is called.
This is possibly the lowest box office flick I’ve heard of as it didn’t quite go straight to video as it probably should have done. I don’t mind this version of the story and its not bad a movie but I recommend watching it around midnight on a crappy movie channel is the best way to fully appreciate it.
