#355 - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (TV special) - (70%)

Made in 1964 is a TV special that appears to be a big influence on many other American movies and has a special place in our family’s heart. Due mainly to a DVD board game we brought many years ago that we have to play on Christmas Eve. Even though the youngest of the household has well grown out of this movie the game gives us pleasure for nostalgia if nothing else. Every year we are reminded of when they were little sat around the board on the floor in front of the TV trying to work out why Hermes wants to be Dentist and the reindeer training was a Coach from High School.

This TV movie is a stop motion animation from way back in 1964. Sam the Snowman introduces everyone and reminds us all about the year when a big snowstorm almost cancelled Christmas. Rudolph as a young fawn has his glowing nose and his coach tells him he should hide it otherwise he will never get picked to pull the sleigh so hides it using mud. He later goes into hiding after falling for another dear named Clarice. King Moonraker is making toys but keeping the misfit toys that no one else wants, to keep them safe. Rudolph has gone into hiding where he has grown into a great deer and come back to find his family gone. They are in fact being held captive by Bumble a snow monster and true villain of the piece and if you can’t work out the rest for yourself you’ve never seen a kid’s story in your life!

The characters from this movie appear in many other places for example the movie Elf has them and a few others have top their hat to this as well. It is enjoyable even though it is very dated and rusty it is short enough to get an outing at least once a Christmas.
