#356 - Danny The Champion Of The World - (70%)

Writer's picture: MyersMyers

This is the movie to probably the first book I ever read. Why I think of this story so fondly is amazing as at the time I was forces to read this as part of my English at school and from memory was written by Roald Dahl. The film is set in the mid 50’s even though the book sets the story in the 70’s the movie itself was released in 1989. It stars the legendary actor Jeremy Irons and his son in the main role of Danny and for Harry Potter fans Robbie Coltrane is in there as well.

The story itself follows Danny who lives with his widower dad in horse drawn caravan which is parked up behind a garage. Land which is the target of businessman Victor Hazell (Robbie) so he needs them out and starts a campaign of hate crimes to get them out, as he is used to getting what he wants. Danny dad in a revenge campaign decides he is going to start poaching Victors pheasants. Danny then has to balance his life between caring for his now illegal father keeping him out of prison, staying on the right side of his over disciplined school teacher whilst planning to humiliate Victors plans for a pheasant shooting party.

This film will rekindle certain peoples childhood as I was forced to read this at school and then it turned me onto reading some of the other Roald Dahl stories and although this is not my favourite Roald story it is still a good one and one that you can share with your children when appropriate. Mine are now too old and there aren’t enough fast cars, gore monsters or jump scares for them.
